Any inexpensive OOS schools out there?

I was previously told that being Hispanic gives me a much greater advantage into applying to schools up north. I live in Florida, and my OOS options are minimal if not none. Keeping that in mind, are there any, ANY, schools outside of Florida, public or private, that have a TOTAL tuition near the same as a public school here in Florida?

I don't care about how far the school is, nor the weather, just the cost difference. Anything more than $5,000+ per year will probably not work.

Thanks.

Is that a total cost or a cost difference from FL schools. That number is below cost of room and board at every school I know. The lowest cost schools are in the northern midwest (N Dakota, S Dakota). Leaving FL means you won’t be able to use Bright Futures.

Think about it…

Just room and board is going to cost more than $5k, so there aren’t any schools that will cost $5k for tuition, fees, books, room, and board. Probably the minimum the cheapest school would be is about $14k or so.

What are your stats? Maybe you qualify for merit scholarships?

Do you qualify for Bright Futures? If so, that will help you afford Florida schools.

Florida is a big state. The north is very different from the south. You can go to school in a different region and have a new experience.

in another thread, you wrote that your parents earn over $200k. And that money isn’t a concern.

You also wrote that you’re applying for FA with FAFSA. Well, you’re not going to get a dime of free money with that income. You’ll get a $5500 unsub loan.

Gender: Male
Location: Florida
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Puerto Rico), White
High School: Creekside High School, Public
High School Type: Sends some grads to top schools.
Will apply for financial aid: Yes (FASFA)

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.10 | Expecting a 3.3 end of semester.
GPA - Weighted: 3.35 | Expecting a 3.6 end of semester.
Class Rank: Top 50%
Class Size: ~400-500

Scores:

SAT taken 5 times, 1570 Superscore
ACT taken once

SAT I Math: 500
SAT I Critical Reading: 540
SAT I Writing: 530
ACT: 24 | Essay 8/12

Your stats aren’t high enough for merit at most schools.

South Dakota State has one of the lowest list prices around:

[Cost Estimate](http://www.sdstate.edu/admissions/financing/undergrad/cost/index.cfm)

^^
Ditto South Dakota Schools of Mines & Technology. A comparative tuition bargain, and a very fine STEM school with rigorous engineering departments. HOWEVER, with your income status it’s unlikely that you’ll get a dime in financial aid.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant I would like to see OOS schools with tuitions that are the same as the ones here in Florida, with just about $5,000 more added on top of that just to see if there are schools out there that cost the same here. I understand that I would be giving up Bright Futures and that schools will not give me free money for my $200K family income level.

Ok…but are you saying that your parents will pay the FLORIDA COA amount MINUS Bright Futures plus about $5k?

So, are you saying that your parents will pay about $20k per year? Is that what they’re SAYING??

If your parents will pay $20k per year, and you borrow $5500 and earn/save $2-3k over the summer, then you’ll have more options.

@mom2collegekids

I don’t know the exact numbers for all the tuition costs of every school here in Florida, but my parents told me that whatever school I get into, they will have no problem paying for all four years for me. At this point, I don’t even know if I’m even eligible for BF or not. If there is an OOS school that costs the same as a school that I could attend here in Florida, then I want to know about it. It’s okay if that OOS school has a total tuition that is maybe like $10,000ish more than a school here in Florida.

I’m desperate for college now and I need options both in and out of state, public or private.

I really don’t understand why you are desperate. Your grades are not bad and your ACT score is above average. You will have plenty of options.

For reference for those making suggestions, the in-state list price of University of Florida (without financial aid, scholarships, Bright Futures, or any other discount) is $20,220 on or off campus and $11,790 commuter. The commuter budget appears to assume that the student living at home only costs $1,090 in food (nothing for utilities or anything else in terms of costs of having another person in the parents’ household).

OOS COA for most of the SUNY’s is about $30K/year.
Some directional universities in the East are a little lower than that.
UMBC and UNC-Asheville, for example, are about $28K.
Truman State (MO.) is about $21K.

The University of Minnesota is a pretty good OOS value at about $28K.

I don’t think OOS publics are going to work to much cheaper for similar quality as FL although they’d certainly fulfill his wish to leave the state to live elsewhere during his college years.
Nevertheless don’t you think there are LOTS of private colleges that would be happy to have someone able to afford $20-25,000 for tuition plus some for room&board, especially in the Midwest? Lots of liberal arts colleges are trying to increase the number of male students on campus, geographic diversity is always a plus, and some schools are seeking out Hispanic/Latino students. The 3.3 is still a B+ average, and is mitigated by the fact he’s from a competitive high school (something I assume the guidance counselor would point out), by the fact he’s a well-paid, taltented cook, and by the fact that he’s apparently had strenuous circumstances (a perfect combo for holistic admission) - so the only thing really hurting him is his 1570. However, lots of “A schools for B+ students” would be able to overlook that score due to the other “pluses” that he’d bring the school.
I believe he’d do better at holistic application schools or even test-optional schools, than at big state schools that are mostly numerical and where the SAT/GPA combo isn’t likely to yield interesting results vs. Florida Public Universities’ results.
OP is applying ED to Flagler, do you know schools like that, either test optional or holistic, that may work out for him and which would be interested in his profile?
I’m thinking some of the Colleges that Change Lives would be a good fit, but there has to be other ideas out there.
