My daughter will be applying to BU ED. She'll be applying to the Sargent School for human physiology and nutrition. She wants this so badly, I don't think she's even thinking about the schools she'll apply to if she doesn't get in. We're all new to this process in my household. Any advise anyone can give me would be appreciated.

Also, anyone know if these stats will give her a chance at the Nursing school at Georgetown? (Human Science major)

SAT's - 1290
Writing portion - 750
SAT II: Math 680
Bio 650
American History 600

GPA 3.8 (93 average)

Taking 3 AP's this year, including Bio, Macro Econ and Calculus. Took AP Amer. last year along with AP Physics

Great recommendations, relevant summer jobs and internships, good list of activities and awards.

What geographic area are you in? Is financial aid a consideration at all?

I would say BU might be a reach for her, just looking at the BU
stats and the fact that two years ago my son with similar stats was waitlisted.

I'm not saying she won't be accepted ED but she should at least be thinking about other schools. It is never a good idea for a student to pin everything on one school.

I think she has a good shot with BU, but with college apps putting all your eggs in one basket is a bad idea.

IIRC, BU's financial aid is almost entirely merit-based, so keep that in mind if cost is a consideration.

I don't know what college culture she wants, but she should be aware that BU's campus is pretty restrictive in terms of student life/housing policy. Some are fine with this, some not so much.

Bigtwix, you could never see someone getting waitlisted with those stats but I have seen it. I have no motivation to lie on these forums. I am a parent who is trying to provide genuine information/help.

jessiehl, I forgot about that. We asked specifically about guest policy during our BU tour. BU had one of the most restrictive guest policies we heard about.

Restrictive in what way? She was taken with the "city atmosphere" at BU, as with other schools she looked at in major cities. Is she not allowed to have guests visit her? Does that mean me, or other friends from high school? Please explain.

Please explain the difference between weighted and unweighted. I'm not sure. We are from NY, lower Westchester County. Financial aid is not a consideration. Her list to go out after January are to Cornell, Georgetown, Michigan, U. Pitt and U. Delaware.

jnovikoff, I toured BU with my daughter this summer. I would say your daughter's a strong candidate providing she has at least average extra-curriculars. The other schools on her list, however, would be better options if she had higher SAT scores. Is she going to retake?

No she isn't. She is not a strong standardized test taker. She's been through private tutoring and still did not get great results. Her 1290 with a 750 for writing is it. Do you have any comments on what you thought of BU?

Well, we felt the campus was too fragmented to have the collegiate experience my daughter's looking for--it's sort of strewn along both sides of Huntington (I think? Anyway, a major thorofare) Avenue with commercial businesses interspersed. The freshman dorm we saw was dismal--I felt claustrophobic going up the stairwell.

Other than that, it was fine. Love that Elie Wiesel is a professor there.

It seems BU changed their guest policy beginning in the Fall 0f 2007. I just googled it and it is better than it was. It used to be that you basically could not have overnight guests. It now states that you can have up to three guests between 2am and 7am but each guest can only visit up to seven times each semester. It seems they are trying to make sure that students aren't sexiled by their roommates.
