Any Insight on Point Park or UArts for the Stage Management Program?

I've applied to

CMU
Emerson
BU
DePaul
Point Park
UArts

for their stage management programs and I've visited BU and CMU already. I LOVE CMU and the juries still out on BU. I'm going to be going to DePaul and Emerson for auditions but I've just applied to Point Park and UArts and won't be able to go to the schools to visit.

Does anyone have any information on either Point Park or UArts (or any of the other schools I'm applying to, if you feel like sharing)? Anything to do with their programs, their facilities, personal experience or experiences of people you know who go there, location, class size, experience gained, etc etc etc would be really helpful.

Thank you.

My son also is applying in State Management. He has applied to DePaul,CMU. Milliken,Webster,Cal Arts, Emerson (early decision),Syracuse. He visited all the schools and he completed his final portfolio reviews last weekend! Now it is just waiting for the letters. He looked at UofArts and Point Park, but decided the programs were not quite what he was looking for. Good luck to you and can't wait to hear what you think of the schools. What made you love CMU?

mainphi: My D is a Junior interested in SM. We've visited NYU, Emerson, and BU but I've also taken a good long look at the info available on websites.

I don't know anything about Point Park but if you look at what you'll be studying at the various schools on your list, you'll find there is a clear difference between CMU and everything else. CMU offers a very technical curriculum. The emphasis is on stagecraft with some design and they cover all the bases for stage managers. The other schools seem to see SMs as theater generalists and so they teach more theater arts courses, lots of history and script analysis, even acting and playwriting. The UArts degree is in theater management and production, not stage management. This gives you the option of a career in arts administration or education. The UArts program is also more individualized and includes a senior project of your choosing. It sounds like a great program but it may not be the best choice for someone who just wants SM.

Like MHETTmom, I wish you the best. Please let CC know where you are accepted, which school you choose and anything else you want to share after it is all over.

Do you know anything about DePaul? When you say technical, do you think it is a better program directed towards SM. I am so confused by the programs. Not knowing that much about theater myself, I am trying to judge the different programs my S has applied to and the costs for attending.

I'm no kind of expert MHETTmom. Everything I know is second-hand. From what I understand, though, technical is not better. It's more like there are different approaches to SM. I'm not familiar yet with a lot of the schools on your list but, by reputation, CalArts is on the technical/design side and DePaul is a more balanced program. I would be very interested in your/your son's reactions to visiting the schools. You can PM me if you'd prefer.

I had receive a PM from someone whose son is at DePaul in Design. I tried to respond but not sure it went through. She was going on break. It was from my post on this thread. If it didn't work could she send a new PM. Sorry I am new at posting!

Point Park's SM program has 5 students/year, so class sizes will be small. there tech majors make up another 15 kids/year
and their bfa is in SM, so your focus would be that, not tech or design

Sorry this is kind of a delayed response, I wasn't getting email notifications about postings.

MHETTmom: I did a CMU pre-college course which is why I love it so much. The profs I had were great and the curriculum and facilities are just what I'm looking for. Also, I don't know much about DePaul yet (I go for my interview on Thursday) but I get the feeling (from reading the website) that it's quite stage management course heavy. Some places only give you one or two classes in it but DePaul has 3 full year courses.

rocket6louise: thanks for the info about the class size and Point Park. How do you know that? Do you go there or did you recently interview with them?

Thank you all!

theater mom: I might be confused about what you mean by "technical" but from what I learned from while I was at CMU pre-college (through the curriculum they had then and things I'd talked to the teachers about) it's not just technical (stage craft wise). They have a great dramaturgy program too and do a lot with costuming and design in lighting, scenery, and sound as well.

^^ close friend is at point park for SM and i've been planning on applying for two years(i'm a junior, so next year will be my year)...so hopefully class of 2014!!!!

I should not have said stagecraft, mainhi. I meant craft in general. Also, I'm not surprised at the quality of CMU dramaturgy. I was just saying that the CMU curriculum includes more credits in crafts and fewer in the other theater arts relative to most of the other schools. End of point.

My daughter has applied to CMU pre-college for this summer and I would love to know more about it. What did you like about the facilities and curriculum? What was the faculty like? Anything else you want to say.

I have a good friend applying into Stage Management. The only thing I know about the program at UArts is that you are required to take a full year of acting and a full year of directing in addition to 2 years with a focus in Stage Management. The program is for both directors and stage managers. I know my friend was turned off by the amount of acting she would have to take, but if that is okay with you, the schools seems to have a pretty strong and interesting program, but not at technically based as CMU.
