Hi,there.I am Jie,major in Computer Science in Southeast University,China. As a freshout with a master's degree in computer science,I was recruited by Agriculture Bank of China as an engineer.Due to my aspiration to be a research professional at a university or other institution,I want to pursuit my study in U.S.

With a low GPA in University ,I have no idea about how to choose a University which will help me to achieve my goal.I plan to retake my GRE in Oct. because of poor performance in last test(verbal:300,math:680,3.5).And I got 587 in TOEFL.

I was involved in some research projects granted by Chinese government and got hand on experience in coding in a famous company in China. And I made myself published in academic journal.

I want to apply PH.D program with finacial aid in Computer Science in the field of computer vision or artificial intelligent or Bioinformatics, which university will be my candidates?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated:)

You're an international students so it'll be more competitive for you. A lot of engineering and science schools are flooded with international applicants. They have a quota of how many international students they can take. You need to distinguish yourself from other applicants. You need to improve on your GRE a bit.

Try for schools in the 20s or 30s :)

Thank you for your advice.I am working on my personal statement. But I feel it is very difficulty.I have no idea how to distinguish myself from others

I am working on my personal statement.I have no idea about how to distinguish myself from other applicants.Whether my work experience should be stressed or not?

You've already finished school so it's nothing you can do to further distinguish yourself academically. Instead, focus on your work experience. For me personally i wrote about how working in a lab shaped my view and steered me towards certain things. For you it'd be artificial intelligence. don't be specific but don't state vastly different areas because it's a sign that you don't know what you're interested in and they'll think that you're going to grad school because you hate your job. Show them you have an idea of what it is that you're about to get yourself into :)

And start talking to your old professors to write you good letters of recommendation. I don't know how it's done in China, but perhaps take them out to lunch?

Other people on here might give you more advice, but that's my take :P

Oh make sure you do research on the people you want to work with. I wrote two statements of purpose for two specific schools and i got in both. and for the rest of the school i just chose the better statement and did Copy & Paste. Edit->find [notre dame] replace with [some school]. Guess what? I didn't get in any of those. I got one rejection saying "We have no professor who does the work that you're interested in" or something to that effect. hehe at least they were nice about it :)

Apply a month early before the deadline! if you apply late they might think they're not on top of your list and they won't look very kindly at your app. At least that's what i heard.
