Any Japanese Speakers at Cal Poly SLO?

Hi Everyone!

My kid is bilingual English / Japanese and one of his comments is that he has been unable to meet any other Japanese speakers at Cal Poly SLO! He has always had other Japanese speakers in every school he has attended, so were were a bit surprised that he has met no one else that speaks the language.

Does anyone out there know any other Japanese speakers currently attending Cal Poly?

There are, of course, Japanese speakers at Cal Poly. In fact, when I walk around campus I hear other languages spoken amongst students. I remembered 2 cute girls walked past me a few weeks ago speaking French to each other.

But I think your son’s best bet is to talk with this professor:

There is a class on Japanese culture at CP, this professor would know all about your question.

@BeingSLO – Yep, I figured that there must be a few Japanese speakers at SLO. He has met a couple of Japanese American / mixed kids, but none of them could speak Japanese. We speak primarily Japanese at home and although he hasn’t gotten too rusty, I figured that he would be a bit better off if he had some Japanese speaking folks to hang with. So far, he has not met any Japanese speakers in his engineering classes. Other languages, yes. The school has diversity, but no Japanese yet. Thanks for the tip! 有り難う御座います!

There is actually a kendo club in nearby Santa Maria, and a Japanese Zen temple in nearby Avilia beach.

I think those will be helpful too.

Hope that helps.

Thank you! Much appreciated.
