Hi, in reading stats for people accepted to the ivies, I see many musicians, but never any percussionists and surely no jazz drummers! Does anyone know a reason for that? Am I missing something here that everyone else knows? Are there any jazz drummers out there going to the ivies?!?!

DS did know a few good drummers. They are indeed in good demand (kind of like session musicians, precious resources shared by many bands.)

He knows a very good jazz player, likely not a drummer though. Whenever he has a chance to play with him, he will try to make it, even when the next day is a midterm. This is because he enjoys playing with him so much. (DS was classical music trained for >12 years and then self-taught a couple of “instruments for the younger generation” during summer break and when school is in session. He practiced a lot quite intensively. He is not a drummer though – even though he sometimes wishes he were.)

There are no lack of musically talented students. One student could compose an original piece, practice, perform, and record it in 3 days, and almost won a national competition, and he is not a music major (and is likely better than most music majors in his talent.)

There are definitely more singers or lead guitarists (but most of them are not in high demand at all unless they are really good) than drummers! It appears everybody tries to be the one on the spot light – It appears to me that being a session musician who supports the band “in the background” is not good enough for many youngsters :)
