any junior/senior bio majors out there?

Anybody taken Biol- p 451 before? It's 'Integrative Human Physiology' with Dr. Whitney Schlegel.

I'm looking for a human physio class to take before my MCAT and this is one of my few options. This or Phsl- p215, but 215 is a 5 credit hour behemoth. Just looking for a relatively simple human phsyio class that won't kill my GPA, the grade distribution for 451 looks really good.

Granted it's mostly bio majors in the class. but still.

any help is appreciated!

It’s not ‘physio’ in the sense that IHP or P215 is, but I would recommend histology (it is a credit heavy course). You’ll take it again in med school and I know IUSOM uses the same book that Mescher uses, so having a background might help lighten the load an ounce in med school. The lecture portion gives you a decent physio background.

I haven’t heard of P451, it might be relatively new (or renamed)

I looked up A 464 but it looks like it’s only offered in the spring.
Anybody taken IHP 451 before??

It is a good thought. However, a lot of seniors may register for L451. It could be tough for Juniors to get in.

I should be fine scheduling wise. I was surprised that this was pretty much the only physiology class without a lab that is widely taken.

P 214 is the 3 credit hour lecture class of 215, but nobody really takes it.

451 has about 60 people per semester and as I said has the good grade distribution.

One question I do have though, I’m a Neuroscience B.S. right now, but if I’d like to add a bio B.A., can I do that?

I know you cant do a double major with two B.S. degrees but can you do a BS and a BA?

You can B.S/B.A but then you have to take the extra language semester and culture classes, extra distribution classes, etc. I wanted to do it but the timing just didn’t work. You really have to plan it out as a freshman to be able to squeeze everything in

soccergurl is spot on actually.

The only people I know who could do the BA/BS double major are people who either started off doing it (she did a double major in classics and biology–planned it in from freshman year) or did BA/BS in biology and chemistry, as they share most of the same core classes. I tried to do a double in biology and political science but would’ve had to have taken 19 credits my last 4 semesters. I settled for the minor.

A quick browsing of the requirements indicates the BA Bio would require you take an additional 2 A&H and 2 N&M courses, 2 culture courses, another semester of language, N330/C118, and 2 upper level lectures + 2 upper level labs (none of the upper levels cross match with neuro, it looks like). It’s at least 30-40 extra credits

No biggie. I’ve planned it out and can fit it all in. I’ve already taken enough NM. I was planning on the extra language semester for my language minor anyway. I can take two courses that are both AH and culture.

I have to take N330 for premed anyway. 451 counts as a lecture and lab.

Its mostly just adding the AH/culture and then L111, 113, 318, and another lab/lecture. It’s actually doable considering I only have 12 credits left before my neuro major is finished off.

A lot of the courses overlap amongst neuro/premed/bio

And ill be taking 12 credit hours this coming summer…without that this would get a lot more complicated lol

What’s the process for declaring my bio double major? Do I just email one of their advisors? The only advisor I’ve ever gone to is in psych

Oh you’re in good shape then. Go online to the bio department’s website and make an appointment for right after break with one of their advisors (I’d recommend Anna Bednarski–she’s also great for telling you which classes are notoriously easy/most dropped) and chat with them. I think you have to sign something for the registrar and they are going to want to make sure everything plans out okay.

Oh for your second lecture/lab I’d recommend A464 as I previously said. No ‘wet’ lab [just looking at slides] and most of the other lecture/labs are pretty awful. I took B300 and was surrounded by hipster botanists and it’s a lot of memorization I’ll never use again. I will never forgot that an apple is a pome and a peach is a drupe. I had several friends drop Z300 (vertebrate zoology…I think it was Z300) because of how bad they were doing. Workload was horrendous and it was hard to keep up with when combined with other classes. A464 also has more openings than a lot of the other lecture/lab combos and I actually found it interesting (lots of work, but interesting). You’ll also use it in med school, I’ve helped a few of my med school friends with tips on how to study the images and whatnot as well

Ok thanks for all your help. Ill definitely look at 464. If I have any other questions I might just PM you
