How or where would one find this information?

Most music scholarships tend to be audition based, with the “bestest getting the mostest”. While this methodology is the standard for music majors, there are occasionally small scholarships offered for participation in ensembles, even for non majors. The policies vary widely by school, and the details are most likely found within the webpages of the institution’s music school or department.

Years ago a friend of mine got a free ride to ASU for his tuba. He now plays in the President’s Marine Band in Washington DC. Yes… he is really, really good.

They are out there.

Look also for other opportunities within the music department/marching band program. Two college sophomores that I know were recently awarded paid positions as equipment manager and uniform manager with their (public midwestern) university marching band. They will be able to hold these positions until they graduate, even if they need five years to finish. Neither have any departmental scholarships.

The scenario scottaa describes is typically reserved for a top notch audition based candidate in a BM performance pursuit. It may or may not also involve an academic based merit award, or be purely music based, depending on the institution. It’s definitely not indicative of a non-major/participatory award.

A couple of additional threads from the music major forum with a range of music based scholarships. While most of the posts reflect offers to performance discipline majors, there are a couple of examples of some non-major participation scholarships.

Hope I didn’t give the impression those scholarships are easy to find.

This guy is probably top 100 in the world at what he does.

good information

Are you talking about marching bands that play at half-time during football games and at other functions?

How much scholarship money do you need? Since those marching bands often have a few hundred participants, the scholarships are often small…like a 1000.

However, if your child will be a music major, some schools give tuition scholarships for excellent musicians (auditions).

What are you looking for? How good is your child? What will his major be?

I was also going to mention Lehigh’s.

Lehigh has an amazing marching band, too. Marching97.org

Note the OP asked this 2 years ago and someone else just brought it up.

I bumped it up because I had asked the same question with 0 replies.
Started searching and found this old thread. Some good info I wanted to share.

Some schools also pay students to participate in band.

Yes some do. The one I know about is Robert Morris University in Chicago, Illinois. It is a private, not for profit that has a marching band for their football program. It includes band, drum line and color guard.
