Any minorities out there?! (Ethnic Diversity Q.)

Hi, i'm Eric Uyemura, from San Diego, California. I'm Japanese and a little worried about the lack of ethnic diversity. Is anybody else experiencing this worry or is it just me? Honestly I'd like to see some Asians around campus, is this something I should be worried about? I got in yesterday and this is one of the few things hampering my decision to attend Colgate University. Of course you don't have to be Asian or a minority to respond!

I just called someone in Colgate and she says Colgate is White dominated.I have the same worry cuz I am Asian from Florida.

Thanks for the input 1991Jasmine! I know how you feel, I actually go to a mainly white high school but still… How about you? Is this a big issue for you?

I got into UC berkeley, but like Colgate better cuz I don’t want to stay in a 60% Asian school(I moved from China). But what people told me about colgate is how people from south feel unhappy and how colgate white people are arrogant, bla, bla, bla.
But I still want to go to Colgate and the liberal art experience. I guess I really have to visit and it won’t be a huge issue for me.(Btw,Miami does not have that many Asians)

I am East Indian. And that is one thing I was worried about Colgate as well. They say that they are trying to diversify their school, but its going pretty slowly. I have heard that it is pretty preppy and dominated by rich white students…So i think visiting is a really good idea to find out for sure.

I think I am ok to be in a white school. As long as I can see a group of minority students around. Like we can from a diversity group and be happy:)

Haha yep I agree, we’ll visit and see. True 1991Jasmine, we’ll be able to spot each other easily in a crowd at Colgate also. Congratulations on Berkeley, its a fantastic school, either way I’m sure you’ll be happy, but Berkeley and Colgate are like polar opposites. balleranddancer, you dance? What kind of dance do you do?

I’ve been studying an ancient Indian classical dance called Kathak for almost 13 years now. I’ll be doing a two hour solo in April soon!!
And… I was captain of my basketball team. So kinda random interests…but thats me!

That’s cool. I wish I know some sort of Chinese ancient dance, lol. Can’t wait to see you guys on the visiting days:)

A two hour solo? Wow!

@1991jasmine: I’m in the same boat. Got accepted to UC Berkeley and a couple of LACs till now. Very confused. I don’t like the idea of attending a public institution with a million kids and I love LACs. But, how can I even compare the two?
They’re poles apart.
:/

This has actually come up here a lot:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/colgate-university/602221-typical-colgate-student.html

Colgate has had a hard time shaking the rich/white/preppy stereotype, unfortunately. It’s definitely no longer as true as it used to be. One thing to keep in mind is that guys in pink pants and green polos are a lot more noticeable than us “normal” kids, so it seems like there’s a lot more of them than there are. Actual official diversity numbers are broken down in one of the posts linked above - there are a significant number of student on substantial financial aid, too.

I was really involved in Japan Club while at Colgate, so I saw first hand the participation in the cultural groups on campus and it was very impressive. There’s the Asia Interest House, La Casa, Harlem Renaissance Center (all housing options), ALANA Cultural Center ([Colgate: ALANA Cultural Center](http://colgate.edu/DesktopDefault1.aspx?tabid=1138&pgID=80)), and many student interest groups ([Colgate: Organizations](http://colgate.edu/DesktopDefault1.aspx?tabid=1141)) that are really active on campus, so I was surprised to see the actual diversity breakdown - the numbers didn’t seem high enough to match my experience/perception.

dancer1502:
Hey, are you gonna visit Colgate?? I hope to meet you guys and decide to go to LAC together:)

chinese here

i’m korean
surprisingly, they gave me excellent financial aid.
But yeah, i didn’t know that there only 7%-ish Asian at Colgate.
No wonder the admission officer liked my essay about diversity :P

Lol, birdieS2, same here. I got amazing FA from Colgate, most likely to go because of that.

^ I’m thinking of visiting. Still waiting for the Ivies to come out!

Diversity has been an issue at Colgate, I think its fine. True, Colgate is like 90% white, and there might be some people who are arrogant, but that is there with every ethnicity. Trust me, there are enough of Asians around (lots of chinese, few indians, and I know just one Japanese, so cant say about that). That said, I would not say that you would feel left out because you are a minority. You would ultimately bond with people who are like you, even if they are not the same ethnicity. However, you could, if you want stay among your own group, and that is quite possible, it is not that minorities are non existent.
Personally, I would not go to a college that has loads of indians(I am indian), if so, what is the point of attending a college in the US?
Good luck with your decision making process. The ball is in your court now!!!

ya i was just accepted and diversity is the one thing that really has me on the fence. I go to a 99% white/jewish/extremely wealthy school and i really wanna switch things up for college! I’m neither one of those things and have felt a bit out of place for the last 4 years (i’m indian and hispanic and my family is not wealthy) and i’m just concerned about re-living my high school experience. the two girls i kno that are already there are white anglo sax/jewish and on a separate note- very very snobby. maybe that’s just a reflection of my school- but still…
help?

FYI, Colgate is only 78% white, not 90%.

There are a few snobby students, but that’s true everywhere. The huge majority of students are not at all, and just because someone is wearing J Crew doesn’t mean they aren’t incredibly nice. Many students are involved in COVE (Center For Outreach, Volunteerism and Education) and spend time volunteering in the community.

39% of class of 2013 students are on financial aid, with the average award at $38,423 per year (=75% of costs covered by aid). Most I knew at Colgate really couldn’t care less about how much money you have or where you buy your clothes. Just because someone is full-pay doesn’t mean they are rich and snobby - maybe their parents started saving for college really early, or the kid worked summers during high school to help pay. I don’t remember anyone ever asking about it - the only people I knew were on aid were friends that said so themselves - otherwise I wouldn’t have known.
