Any Negatives to Yale?

Even thought I've gotten into Yale, I'm still applying to other colleges RD - and I think many of us are.

One of the other colleges I'm applying to is Duke since it's closer to home and I heard the social scene is pretty crazy there. Do you know of any cons about the Yale environment?

This is interesting...I would like to know too!
Because right now..I can't think of any :)

The only thing I can think of is that it's disturbingly hard to get into, but since you're in I'd say there aren't any cons!

Congrats on your acceptance by the way, that's a major feat :)

New Haven is improving, so I'm not too worried.
Right now my number one concern is cockroaches.

...in the dorms?

if so, that's a new one!

Yeah, apparently. I was surprised to read that in an old thread about the residential colleges.
I'm TERRIFIED of insects.

hahaha ME TOO!
even if its like the tiniest thing ever i get freaked out...

That's disgusting...and kind of surprising.

Okay, so one check in the con column: "alleged cockroaches in the dorms"
although this could be construed as a pro...if, say, an atomic bomb were dropped on Yale you could rest assured that a few relics to prove its existence to future civilizations would have survived in the aftermath.

Perhaps a few should be branded with "Y" on their back...just so that we can be sure they were in fact the Yale roaches ;)

EW! Nasty!!

I can't stand insects!
I can't even stand ants. haha

Do other college dorms have cockroaches as well?

Please tell me this isn't true! I'd still go to Yale in a heartbeat if accepted though. :)

Lol, I've never seen cockroaches in my year and a half at Yale thus far. I have seen a mouse, though that was in the basement laundry room of freshman housing.

You can get insects or rodents at any college if you're messy and don't clean up after yourself.

Just because they clean the dorms doesn't mean someone is going to pick up your messes all the time. Use common sense and you should be fine.

haha true, true asiantofu

so rd31, no complaints about your time at yale?

My only complaint is that the campus is not as beautiful as Princeton. And it's cold.

I was also deferred. But I don't consider that a negative.

Wow. So no big complaints so far? (I personally LOVE the Yale campus and would suffer the cold)

Only big problem is the acceptance rate. :)

mhmmmm i bought a big poofy jacket to prepare for the cold! [since im from virginia beach i'm totally not made for new england weather]
hopefully it'll be warm enough...

hmm, i don't really have complaints. maybe Yale should invest more in restoring some of the neighborhoods in New Haven. as for the weather, i actually like it, but that's probably because it's significantly warmer than my hometown in southwest Michigan.

i'm a little giddy after just receiving my third semester grades -- i'm reaping the benefits of grade inflation (even as a science major).

ah, n00bs...cold shmold :)

really though, it's not a big deal (New England isn't like the arctic or anything..) and snow is like the greatest thing ever, nothing is prettier than New England covered by a couple inches (or in this year's case, 15 inches :D) and CT is at least 10 warmer than where I'm from, so I'd consider it a temperature upgrade if I went there ;)

If I went to Yale straight from Canada, I wouldn't complain. By my years down south between the Canadian days and the Yale days have caused a severe cold tolerance regression.

I'm from Florida.
I've seen snow twice, though, and have even been in 18 degree weather one morning when I was on college visits!

Last night, it was 53 degrees here.. Now THAT is cold!

Haha yeah I haven't seen more than an inch of snow since I was in like elementary school! So we all get really excited when there's a 50% chance of an inch of slow accumulating over night because we'll probably get out of school. Even if there's no school on the ground..a thin layer of ice would do the job.

Unfortunately...I have to bundle up even if it's 50 degrees outside and complain constantly about wearing a coat. (Can't stand coats)

But...Yale would be worth it!
