hey anyone out there going to the Bridges program at Miami U in Nov.?

Have you applied and /or been accepted? My child already participated in MLPSI—do you know if you can “stack” bridges on top of MLPSI? Is Bridges replacing MLPSI?

Miami just placed Bridges on the website and unless you have the actual url—you can’t link to the actual details— muohio.edu/bridges

Seems like they just posted it and they sure didn’t give much time to get application into Miami—I’m sure that’s why they extended the deadline

Yeah, I’m applying.

$4k/yr. sounds good to me :)

I may be mistaken but isnt that for URMs

Yes it is for URMs.

Yeah, my guidance coulselar gave it to a bunch of snobby WASP white kids. Go figure.

I guess I’ll use the essay to try and sound Hispanic or something (I’m a radical-liberal white guy, so I WOULD add diversity to this conservative cesspool of a school)

Congratulations on knowing nothing about the school.

^My mom got her undergrad degree and MBA there, my favorite teacher lives in town and sent all of her kids there, and my other favorite teacher (I have 3) recently sent her daughter there, who was shut out by and disgusted by the sorority preppy WASP atmosphere.

I was one of the first to see the new business and engineering schools once they opened (think very first), and I have had much contact with the administration.

I’m on campus about once a month, and was first there when I was a toddler, and have been many times since (my parents frequently try to convince me taht there are no other colleges in the world, thus why I particiapte on this site and believe it is such a valuable asset).

I’m a native resident of Middletown, OH, I know some professors and administrators there personally, and have assissted with the past two years of students from my school that have chosen to attend Miami U.

Yeah, the last arguement you can make about my comments is that I know nothing about the school. If anything, my main reason for disgust is because I know TOO MUCH about it. It’s been a part of my life since I was born, much like OSU was for others in Ohio except without the sports influence and decidely much stronger, and it’s the reason why I have worked my butt off for the past 13 years of my schooling career, for a large part.

Now, after truly seeing the world of colleges on my own, I can easily see Miami’s many faults. I expose them frequently here on CC, and make extra effort to demean the school. I’m sorry, but I will continue to do so as I have seen that there are many far superior options to this school (like joining the mafia is really a step up).

Yeah, you know so much about it that you are applying the Bridges program as a white kid. You know sooooo much about it that you believe it is a “conservative cess pool”.

Yeah, Miami isn’t the best school ever; no **** sherlock. Are there better schools out there? Yes. Is joining the mafia a step up? I sincerely hope you were engaging in hyperbole.

Just because you are on the campus doesn’t mean ****. In fact the only way to really know a college is to go there, as in actually attend the school.

Allow me to continue my stream of consciousness post.

You have worked your butt off for the past 13 years because of Miami? I cannot fathom your reasoning. Was that because you wanted to go there? If so, you obviously dislike the school (see the (hopefully) hyperbolic comment on the mafia), so why would you work hard to go there? If it is because you don’t want to go to the school (i.e. working hard to go elsewhere) that makes no sense either as you couldn’t have possibly been able to decide at an age of 4 or 5 that you didn’t want to go there. You were obviously heavily influenced by your parental units TO LIKE it and at a young age would have given into their influence. Further, 13 years? As in you have been working your butt off in school since you were in kindergarten? Or were you held back a grade?

Anyway, you can tell me all about the people you know and the things you have done, but you obviously have skewed perceptions of the school, likely derived from your (seemingly) overbearing parents who wish ever so dearly for you to go the Miami. Of course it could also be that you are a rebel without a cause. Perhaps someone who wishes to be a nonconformist?

“sorority preppy WASP atmosphere.” - ???
OHKID, just stop, please.

That was just what I was told by my teacher, who happens to be one of my favorites and is the reason why I got involved in the AP program at my school. Her daughter hated first year dorms due to what you quoted above, but loved the school after getting away from it. Trust me, this school makes sense for me out the wazoo and is almost tailor made to my career interests, but I still have concerns about the social atmosphere because this school continously gets a bad rap.

Unfortunately for me, social atmosphere is a big factor, thus why I’m voicing my concern. Most of the time, though, I simply get a laugh or vicious attack in return when I question this, from all sources ranging from my parents to peers to others, as well. I launched a thread on here a while ago that really helped me to overcome many of my problems with this school, but still, I have concerns.

However, that does not give me legitimate reason to “hate” on the school, so if I offended anyone, I apologize (they were really just snide commets, I swear ). Still, I’m just here to talk about ALL sides of the university, including that of popular opinion and the media.

Trust me, I wish that many of the things I say in my posts were not true, but I have been informed otherwise. I am more than welcome to criticism of my posts, IF it contains legitimate correction and not just going the easy way out by simply attacking my credibility and character. (yes, I deal with City-Data posters all the time in fight threads. I know more than enough to win one, but I would rather this not be a “fight thread” in the first place)

I really don’t think you will have a problem in the dorms if you have an open mind. If you’re looking for a negative characteristic, you’ll find it-- but if you’re looking for people with similar interests, you will find them, too. I’ve mentioned that I am further from the “Miami image” than you are, and I haven’t had any problems with discrimination on campus. (Also, being liberal will not make you stand out at all!) Miami is far from perfect, but it’s not nearly as snobby or preppy as some make it out to be.

Re: your original comment about the fact that there are many “superior” schools-- my best friend is at a top 3 private, and we are currently working on projects with extremely similar requirements. The most significant difference is that hers is required, and mine is optional. You can push yourself as hard (or as little) as you want; I’ve yet to exhaust the resources that are available to me.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions or concerns.

OK…ENOUGH…Miami is a great school…my brother is there! He is African-Am and he’s in the band. He says it is mostly white and preppy, but hey it is OH and we’re from Houston. so imagine his culture shock!! but I just wanted to know if any one got into the bridges program already! ANY ONE GOT THERE ACCEPTANCE PACKET YET!!! My cousin applied!

SO…did anyone get into the bridges program yet? I haven’t got my packet yet and I’m worried

[Bridges: A Program of Excellence](http://www.miami.muohio.edu/admission/bridges/):

The [Personal Statement](http://www.miami.muohio.edu/admission/bridges/pdfs/Bridges_Application_09.pdf) prompt in the application details a a number of dimensions for diversity/underrepresentation:

It stands to reason that to fulfill the program’s mission of ‘bridging’ between these stated dimensions that they would have to recruit individuals from each of the dimensions.

I got in.

Got my email a few days ago and my packet in the mail today.

Im 100% white and Catholic.

Well…that’s just like OH!!! And Miami needs diversity real bad!!!

who knows, i have pretty good grades and test scores and wrote some sweet essays that my english teacher loved so maybe im just one of the few white kids…but again i have no way of knowing.

From the [Bridges: A Program of Excellence](http://www.miami.muohio.edu/admission/bridges/pdfs/Bridges_Application_09.pdf) application:

[As noted](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063408261-post15.html), the program appears to be striving for diversity along several dimensions; including “…gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies”.

Consider the following:

^Yeah, my parents would let me apply because they were afraid I would be labeled as LGBT, (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender for y’all that aren’t “in the know” ;)), which I am not. I also wouldn’t qualify as having “economic diversity”, as well.

Just a warning to Alex and anyone else reading who gets a little too much attention from the LGBT crowd after attending the program.
