I don't know what i need, i just want to be protected from everything. I dont know whether mcafee or norton is better or what. Just tell me whats best or what u use! thanx

Ad-Adware is a great anti-virus programme.

Spysweeper is pretty good.

Cheesy I know but "ASK JEEVES" He's the man!

Panda Titanium is awesome. I highly reccomend it.

What does Panda Titanium act for?

Mozilla sucks..that what I have to say. No-Adware is excellent though=)!

Panda is an anti-virus, fire wall, anti-spyware. It does everything. I think you can go to http://www.pandasoftware.com/ I I believe there's a way to do a free scan.

Mozilla? %/

hijack this, spyware doctor, symantec antivirus

spyware guard, avg virus protection, avast! free antivirus, Zone Alarm is a great firewall--lets u know all incoming and outgoing...good for when u have to stop those annoying browser hacks that come from existing spyware--and of course spy bot search and destry and Ad-Aware SE.

Microsoft has a free Beta download....and its awesome against spyware. Other commonly used free ones include Spybot and Adware.

All of the following are free downloads, yet pretty good.

Anti-Virus: Avast!, AVG Home

Firewall: ZoneAlarm Personal

Anti-Spyware: Microsoft Anti-Spyware, AdAware, S&D SpyBot

u basically named my setup ucapplicant04

Zone Alarm is a very good firewall and, with the premium edition (that you pay for), very good ad blocker. As to anti-spyware, Ad-Aware is OK, the new Microsoft is OK, Pest Patrol (which you need to pay for) is OK, and so are a number of others. None is excellent. Thus, you really need to get 3 or 4 of them because none ever seems to cover all the latest nasty stuff and one may do the job where another does not and you never know which one that will be.

Note to the above: someone said Ad-Aware was a "great anti-virus" program. It is not really an anti-virus program which blocks viruses but is geared toward spyware.

As to anti-virus, I prefer Norton (Symantec); McAfee is OK but it can be annoying with its own pop-ups and is often more complicated than Norton. Also, McAfee is a pain in the butt to eliminate from your computer once you have it and thus if you ever want to change, you will spend a number of hours trying to find all the hidden McAfee stuff that is on your computer to get rid of it because the remove program feature just can't get rid of it. Note, before buying an anti-virus program, you should check with the college you will be attending to see what it has for its network system -- it may have a free download of anti-virus software (example: UIUC has McAfee and students get it for free). Hijack This is good to have but it is really a program designed to examine and list things that are in your computer so someone else, the people who publish Hijack This, can then examine what you have and tell you what to remove.

Don't get Symantec. It is a HUGE drain on system resources. Avast! works just as good plus it has a much smaller footprint.

An Apple Computer is the best virus protection you can have...because there are no viruses!

Most schools distribute institutional versions of anti-virus and firewall software. You should really check with your school, since many consumer versions of such software will prove ineffective within a university network. As for spyware, you guess is as good as mine. The best way to protect yourself against that is to refrain from downloading freeware/shareware or other programs.

I have norton and ad-aware, I really like ad-aware cause my computer always seems to run better after I use it but norton never seems to find anything, I don't know if that's good or bad

Ad-Aware is wonderful. I also use WinPatrol, which I highly recommend.

ETA: Make sure you get the Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. There are several other sites out there with similar names that actually install malware and other garbage on your computer because they know people sometimes use a different spelling of "Ad-Aware" and download the wrong program.
