I’m pretty far from OSU but I really love the school. Are there any far OOS residents that are going to go? If so, how far, and are you stressed about transportation back and forth? I’m 10 hours away by car and about 2 hours by plane, but am stressing about going back and forth all the time… but I really love the school!
Edit: by all the time I mean moving in every year, moving out, spring break, winter break and all that!
@globalthinker We are about 8+ hrs away. My D attends U of SC and we are about 11 hrs away from her school. It’s a long but doable drive to drop off in August and pick up in May. For other vacations, she flies. We really shop around for flights. There is also the Amtrak. Depending on where you live, many times you can find another student to travel / drive with. Not sure if OSU does this but, many schools also offer other types of opportunities for spring break with involve community service where the student can stay local or travel as a group. My S is deciding between OSU and 2 other schools that are all a distance from home. Don’t stress, there will be many in your same situation.
My son has committed to OSU and we are about an 8 hour drive away. It’s not ideal from my point of view, I’d prefer that he was 4 hours or less of a drive away. But it was his definite first choice and he got enough scholarship money to make it cheaper than any of the in-state options he was considering. So we figured we could apply some of our “savings” to paying for him to fly back or us to fly out there vs. having to drive each time. Obviously we will drive him out there in August and go back out in May to bring him home. It’s just a question of how many other times we drive out there. I’m hopeful that he can catch some rides home with the limited # of other people in our area that go to OSU. A co-worker’s daughter goes there and will be a junior next year so I’d definitely see if he can catch rides home with her.
So I understand and think it makes sense that distance is a component of anyone’s decision about where to go to college. I’ve made myself comfortable with the fact that MANY kids go to college a much longer distance away (east coast kids going to west coast schools and vice versa) and seem to manage it just fine.
