Any opinions on "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"?

I've seen this movie, like a zillion times, and I just wanted to know if anyone else has. I think it's great; it's actually become my new favorite. Tell me if u agree, or if you think it stunk.

i love the writer--Kaufman, i think--he wrote Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. I love ESOSM. Great movie.

Meet me in Montauk! Excellent movie, the different colored hair messed me up at first, I thought my color was effed up.

what is this about- I might want to see it

From the back cover (I paid 23 dollars for this movie on DVD) :

Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), has had their tumultuous relationship erased from her mind. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), to get the same treatment. But as his memories of Clementine begin to fade, Joel realizes how much he still loves her.

wow Joev- it seems like years since I've seen you

Its only been the weekend, lol. Had military stuff this past weekend. Alot of my buddies are being shipped to Germany for 6 months. I wanted on the trip and they wouldnt let me, said all the spots were filled up. I should have volunteered when I had the chance.

I post so often, and I'm so used to seeing you here, what will I do when all of my older friends go to college/graduate? I'll have to mentor these younger ones haha:p. Why didn't you volunteer?

Great movie and you must watch it multiple times.

so strange
just saw it unnormal=scary

I saw this movie having absolutely no idea what it was about. It's very odd, but it works. I liked it a lot.

Does anyone know who wrote that poem (?) with the movie title in it?

Now that you mention it: Eloisa to Abelard by Alexander Pope

I did not realize that this was from a poem. Here is a link to the whole poem

<a href="http://quotations.about.com/b/a/080763.htm%5B/url%5D">http://quotations.about.com/b/a/080763.htm</a></p>

Yeah... Kirstin(sp?) Dunst calls him Pope Alexander. LOL.

I hated this movie. Too strange for me. I couldn't follow it and found it long and boring!

Has anyone read the original script of the movie? (It's available at <a href="http://www.beingcharliekaufman.com/spotless.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.beingcharliekaufman.com/spotless.pdf</a>.) I read the script first and fell madly in love with it. Then I saw the movie and even though I liked it a lot, I was very disappointed with the ending. I liked the script's ending so much more.

I liked this movie a lot, but it was really funny. I was at my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving, and her and her husband were talking to us about it, and they were all, "yeah it was hard to follow...so he got his memory erased what, three times?" I was like..."I don't think so...crap, I missed something and now I have to go watch it again." So I did and it turned out they're just morons.

I think this is probably the best movie of the year so far; haven't seen the Aviator yet, but apparently it's pretty good too...as far as Oscars go, right now I think the only thing that could possible give ESOTSM a run for its money is The Incredibles, but they'd never give the Best Picture Oscar to a cartoon, no matter how good it is.

It would be nice to see Kaufman, however strange a guy he is, win an Oscar.

PS: jenz, what was the other ending, I was too lazy to read the whole script.

i've actually been hearing Million Dollar Baby is the favorite to sweep the oscars in most categories

eehhh, I was apprehensive about posting it just in case people haven't seen the movie yet. Anyways, in the original script, instead of starting off in modern time, the movie starts off in the year 2054, and Mary is an old woman trying to publish a book called "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" that tells the story of Joel, Clem, and everyone else. This beginning scene is very brief. And then there's the movie as it was seen in theaters. At the end of the original script, the setting goes to the year 2054 again. Mary is still bitter, working for Howard as his receptionist, and listening to the confession tapes all the time. Lacuna is still operating. An old woman comes into the Howard's office and she's Clem. She wants to get Joel erased from her memory again. Howard pulls up the file on Clementine and we see that she's had the memory erased 15 times over the past 50 years, all of them involving Joel Barish. And then Clem tells her story, "Well, I met this man, Joel, 3 years ago, at a senior dance...We'd both been alone for so long....I remember Joel and I were having breakfast and I said something and he just stared at me as if I didn't exist. As if I had never existed...his eyes used to be so filled with love. But it was gone. How can I go back to being alone after seeing love? I was alone for so long. What had I done with my life? I was alone so long."
And then the movie ends.

I loved how the ending showed that Clementine and Joel were destined for each other, even though they kept on getting bored and erasing each other away. No matter how hard they tried, they always went back and made the same mistake and went back to each other b/c (1) they were meant to be and (2) they learned from their mistakes b/c their memories just on being erased. The last 2 pages of the script were amazing, prob. my favorite part, which is why I was so upset they cut out all the futuristic stuff. I didn't like how the movie in theaters just left the viewer guessing at what would happen to Joel and Clem.

In my opinion, it's the most depressing movie ever written.
