I am considering Johns Hopkins EP as compared to similar programs at CMU, UT and Northwestern. Does anyone have any experience with these programs? How is the student body? How difficult is the coursework? I am interested in Systems Engineering or possibly Information Systems Engineering.

Current JHU EP student here doing Information Systems Engineering (graduating in December 2014).

I have completed 6/10 required courses in the program, and overall I have really enjoyed the coursework and curriculum. Here are a few of the main points:

I wouldn’t recommend doing the program entirely online. The value you can get from collaborating with classmates is priceless, and you will not get the same experience sitting behind a desk and completing the classes. Try to be physically present for at least half the degree (if not more).

The JHU name has already improved my career. Prior to JHU EP, I was working at a Fortune 100 company with an undergraduate degree from a Top 10 public university. Since I began the Masters program (September 2013), I have secured a job at another Fortune 100 company making over 6 figures annually (I’m currently 23 years old).

The courses are hit-or-miss. I have taken 4 great classes, 1 good class, and 1 mediocre class. The mediocre class had very little professor engagement, and the weekly lecture was bland and confusing. Aside from this one exception, the other courses have been informative and extremely helpful. I would consider asking around to get an idea of which courses are better than others.

The faculty teaching the courses are very knowledgeable. My current professor has a BS MS PHD from MIT and has worked at a variety of top companies.

The courses can be difficult if you cannot manage or dedicate time well. A few of them require a lot of reading, and the assignments can take well over 10-12 hours a week per course.

The student body is mixed, with an average age of 33. Many of the students have a wealth of experience so it is beneficial to reach out to them and establish strong relationships.
