Just curious if anyone is like my son and wasn't interested in Ivys or other east coast schools. If so, why?

Hi, Gladmom.... my son didn't apply to any Ivies or any other selective schools either. He applied early action to Stanford and was deferred. He only applied to 2 other schools, a local liberal arts univ and the big state school. He was primarily interested in Stanford because of the "intellectual vitality" and ability to take classes across disciplines as an undergrad and still work closely with profs. Prestige, etc, was not part of the equation. Also, we live in WA and he didn't want to be TOO far from home, thank God!

I only applied to UCs and Stanford. Just didn't want to go all the way across the country for college.

Job=Mom: Congrats to your son! My son applied to our in-state flagship, three west coast state flagships, two local privates and U of Chicago. He, too, is looking forward to the "intellectual vitality", as he doesn't have much in common with any of his classmates at his small school. Strong academics and climate were the most important draws for him. As I have mentioned elsewhere, he is very excited about attending college where there is no winter. So, he will be very far from us, but my H and I will have a great excuse to visit the west coast.

.illogic: If we lived in California, that would have been my son's plan as well.

I applied southern and stanford.

Duke
Vanderbilt
UVA
GT
VT
Clemson

Stanford. It's a reach but I don't mind going far for stanford. Weather is worth it anyways.

Heh, Stanford obviously thought I had applied to HYPM (they sent me an early approval letter), though I didn't apply to any of 'em. I didn't apply to any schools outside of California. =p

Gladmom,

Thanks for the kind words! See you at Stanford! H and I are so proud of our son, BUT it's going to be tough to have him away...he's our friend, too...thank heaven for cell phones and the internet!

BTW, LOVE Chicago...what a cool town, nice people! Cheers!

wow i wish i applied to Harvard. i heard it's easier to get into harvard than stanford. is this true?

I did not apply to any East Coast schools because, thankfully, I got accepted via SCEA and didn't see the point.

iamtooperfect: No. Harvard's admit rate was 7.1% and Stanford's was 9.5%, although both are incredibly hard to get into. Did you apply to any of the east coast schools?

I won't say which is harder to get into, but imo it seems that Stanford's admissions are more unpredictable!

^^ I agree, but for both schools, even though Harvard's admissions rate is lower this year. Three girls from my school alone got accepted to Harvard (including me), but I'm the only person who was accepted to Stanford! My parents are now under some the impression that Stanford is tougher to get into!

No one from my son's school has ever gone to an Ivy or Stanford, although a few have gone to top 10 or 20 universities. One went to Williams. I subscribe to the crapshoot philosophy of admissions for top kids applying to top schools. I think it will be even harder to get into Stanford next year when many middle income kids who thought that paying for Stanford would be impossible send in their applications. Stanford was already great about paying for students from the lowest incomes, but after the application deadlines for this year, they have vastly improved the picture for middle income families.

Yes, I applied to Johns Hopkins but I got waitlisted there but was accepted into Stanford. Quite strange
