Son is looking for a program that has both MT and AT or non-musical theater; and. more importantly that permits students of one department to audition for shows in the other. For instance, I read that Hartt allows MT students to audition for non-musicals but does not allow ATs to audition for musicals. Does anyone know of a program that has open auditions between both programs? Thanks.

Coastal Carolina holds season auditions and everyone auditions for all the shows. Cross casting occurs all the time. My D is an MT major and she has been cast in as many plays as musicals during her time there. They cast by who is right for the part. This fall she will be performing in Sweeney Todd: In Concert which is actually a department of music production. It’s very open casting.

James Madison allows MTs and Theatre students to audition for both plays and musicals. So does Syracuse.

Ithaca, Indiana and FSU all allow Acting students to audition for musicals and vice versa.

Otterbein allows this.

Shenandoah also allows both MT and Acting majors to audition for plays and musicals.

U of Utah also auditions AT’s for musicals and MT’s for Plays

.Oklahoma City University allows and encourages this also!

I’m fairly certain that Northwestern allows anyone to audition for everything.

Pretty sure Ball State does.

I think what you’ll find is more do allow cross-auditioning than don’t allow it.

Agree with amtc!

thanks for all the replies—reassuring and helpful!

I think Hartt is the least open of these-- they do allow MT’s to audition for roles in straight plays but it’s mostly MT’s who haven’t been cast in a musical during that time period (and usually filling the smallest roles.) There isn’t a big open audition where you might come out playing either Hamlet or Billy Flynn. Each class is its own ensemble and some people will fill in as needed.

If I remember correctly CMU allows MT’s to audition for both but not the other way around. They do not allow main stage auditions until your junior year so the MT’s need the opportunity for the musicals

At Point Park, students can audition for plays and musicals whether they are acting or MT. In fact, if you are getting any talent scholarship money at all you are bound by that to audition for all the productions during the school year. In the fall of 2012, the young man who played John Proctor in The Crucible was an MT and the young man who played Max Bialystock in The Producers was an acting major. Both did a great job.

Rider MTs can audition for the plays, and last year there was at least one BA theatre student in the spring musical and a pop music major had the lead male role. :)

Texas State auditions are combined.

At UCLA, the actors and MTs can (and are encouraged to) audition for both musicals and plays. Actors and MTs take the same acting classes. It is a very collaborative environment, and there is no “distinction” placed between actors and MTs, as both are actors.
