Any pros or cons for incoming CENG taking Physics 1 and 2 AP test?

Student is planning on attending CP for CPE this fall. These are not calculus based so would not count for graduation. There are no elective credits so they couldn’t count for that. Since don’t count for degree progress it appears they won’t help with registration priority. No apparent upside.

It appears APs don’t count against maximum credit for graduation so I don’t see any downside either.

Anything we are overlooking?

Student is inclined to take the test (already paid for) without bothering to study.

I don’t see any positive to taking the non-calc based test. Physics C is a different story. My son is an ME and tested out of Physics 1 at Poly. Good luck!

I believe it is a required support class. You can either choose chemistry or physics series, and the AP physics test will help him test out of those classes

@NLinsanity, AP Physics 1 and 2 are new since you were in HS. They are non-calculus based and not applicable to any engineering majors at Poly. They’d be helpful for other degrees that require less stringent physics though.

So I don’t see any upside - unless possibly the student changes to a major outside CENG - but is there any downside such as maximum credit rules or something odd like that?

Not at Cal Poly
