Any Questions for a current student?

Can Duke students (Frosh '06) get a discount at the Duke Basketball Camp for their little brothers? I know they do this at other colleges.,,,,,

Duke basketball camp - I doubt you can get a discount, but it never hurts to ask. Call the Duke ticket office (go to www.goduke.com) and asked to be transferred to the Basketball office. An interesting fact for incoming freshmen - did you know that the elevator that will take you to the top floor of Coach K's tower (I don't remember its actual name) actually has a biometric identifier on it. You have to scan your fingerprint to take the elevator to the sixth floor.

Politics - professors here are generally liberal, but I have never encountered one that has tried to force his/her views onto students. Students are across the board politically - sometimes a bit apathetic. There are numerous active political groups you can join: Duke Political Union (no affiliation; where anyone interested in politics is a member - holds discussions, debates, speakers, etc.) Duke Dems, College Republicans, Duke Conservative Union, and ACLU among others.

Questions:

Can students stay on campus on winter or summer vacation? If they do stay, what can they do during vacations?

What is Greek life? Is it only for white students, or American citizens? What does a fraternity do besides partying?

the coolest thing about the elevator in schwartz-butters is that the floor is like a basketball court :P PS the football elevator requires fingerprints too

No you usually cannot stay over winter vacation. Dorms close at the end of finals. If you are taking classes over the summer, you can stay on campus. Otherwise, you can't stay on campus. This, of course, is in general there may be exceptions.

Greek organizations are essentially social clubs that you join second semester. They have parties, date functions, and community service. Are they only for white students or American citizens? Absolutely not. Almost all Duke students will not tolerate racism.

I believe international students living on Central can stay, so make some friends with upperclassmen

How about intramurals? Are students pretty active in sports?

Are there many semi formal events that require a jacket and tie?

IM: There are definitely active IM sports; many teams associated with dorms; doubtless if you want to play something, you can find others to make a team.

Semi-formal events: Always good to have a jacket and a tie handy - you never know when you might be invited to something awesome that either requires or suggests one. If getting a jacket for the first time - go a little bigger than you think...

I noticed someone asked about marching/pep band earlier. I was thinking about joining the pep band but I looked on their website and they sounded really strict about their attendance and they said you must do marching band to do pep band. Is there any way to get around this, because I've never marched before, and I'm not entirely sure I want to start.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew about other music ensembles on campus, specifically the band or orchestra. I play the trumpet and am interested in trying out. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get in, if it is possible to do both, or any other relevant info?

i really don't think there's a way of doing pep band without doing marching band... honestly, EVERYONE would do that if they could-- easiest way into cameron plus you don't have to sacrifice tailgates (or what's left of them) during football season. besides, the marching band basically just sits on the bleachers in funny outfits during football games... i think they just walk around the track once during halftime. i'm sure it's the first time marching for several other people.

as for anything else musical, i don't know.

as for someone else's questions on semi-formals-- definitely if you're a guy bring a suit, and if you're a girl bring a dress or two. events tend to pop up- i think as a freshmen there's less semi-formal things during fall semester. however, for spring semester, if you're planning on rushing a fraternity or a sorority you WILL need semiformal attire (there's a semiformal round for girl's rush, and an actual semi-formal event for fraternity rush) because there are several greek formals and semiformals in the spring.

you can't stay on campus for winter vacation or summer vacation. you can take summer classes and live at duke during the summer, but it will be an added expense, of course.

as for greek organizations, you do not need to be white or an american citizen to join.

Hey guys,
How do you declare a major? Is it on ACES?
Thanks!

-Shirley

For majors: Trinity folks work with Academic Advising and Pratt folks work with Dean Simmons to declare a major. There's a little more work for Trinity folks (Pratt folks fill out a form; Trinity folks have a short essay)

The essay, I believe, has no impact on anything, ever, under any circumstances...

AH - not true - at least one student was suspended for plagiarising it. Yeah - I know...

Why the - ??

So here's an essay which you can literally type gibberish into and be just fine, and some kid plagiarizes it?? Why??

You declare your major on ACES (it's with the long range plan), but it is NOT recommended to do it as a freshman (especially before setting foot on campus). You will still be meeting with your pre-major advisor in the fall.

I have a question....

For those of you who have taken (or even heard about Chem 23L) what do you think about it? Was is really hard and require insane amounts of studying?

Depends on your own HS background. Wait until you get your AP scores back. Anything below a 4 (i.e. a 1, 2, or 3) should probably be a warning, while a 5 should push you into 151 rather than 23.

Here's the problem: Generally, it's understood that 21 and 22 are a nightmare, even if you'd be underqualified for 23. So that's the tradeoff you have to weigh.
