Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

AH!
UCLAboundanddown:

Thanks for the information about double majoring. I choose UCLA over going to college with my boyfriend because I want to just go and focus and Summer School does not scare me. I will have all the lower division done for both majors (english and communications), except the CS that are needed to take at UCLA. I really hope I can maintain something close to my current GPA at UCLA in order to add on communications as a second major next year. You have given me hope. Thank you!

For everyone wanting/thinking about summer session: It’s extremely expense, I feel like UCLA ups the prices just to get more $$ (of course)…today is the LAST day you can apply for Financial Aid. The application has been open since April 1st, so if you have submitted your SIR and want to take summer classes, I suggest you getting on that ASAP.

Also, as far as switching into other majors/double majoring, for sure I know these you can’t get into: Psychology (I work in the department, I’ve seen so many people request this), Sociology, Communications, BizEcon. If there’s others, I’ll try to look them up!

Wait, so there’s no way to add on Communications as a double major?

Ugh I should have applied as a communications major and added on English.

To itzcaroll: Unfortunately there’s no set “list” of the majors that you can switch into, I wish there was. Your best bet is to email the major department that you want to switch into and then follow up with your OC. Those two that you mentioned are not impacted, so I’m sure you won’t have a problem. Also, notice how I said “probably” meaning some people get it done in two years some don’t. Good luck!

To LostCollegeBound: I don’t think so. I’ve heard students talking to the SAOs/Departmental Counselors, but I’m not sure of what the outcome was. As far as I know, it’s much more difficult to get into BizEcon, but try emailing the department and letting them know. Good luck!

To dezziner: When you go to the FAFSA site, click on ‘Make Corrections to your FAFSA’ and fix it there. Then the FAFSA site will re-send it to UCLA automatically. That is correct, if you don’t put in your friends UC ID #, then you will be paired up with someone. Of course, they do try to match you with someone whom you would be comfortable with, usually also a transfer student.

To jg2290: Orientation for transfers is last unfortunately, so you’re looking at date from late June to August. You’ll be informed for Orientation mid-May if I’m correct…they send you a cheesy ‘UCLA Orientation’ blue brochure type of thing and there they go over all the information about it and how to sign up, etc. Sign up dates, hahaha…if you look back on here, you’ll see last year we were all on here again and crashing the server to get what date we wanted. For the Financial Aid, I’m not sure, during summer because they are still working on ours (returning students). Also, they sent out an email saying they have received the most paperwork in all of the school years so yeah…it could take a while. Finally, the minor thing is quite simple. You simply take the classes and whenever you want or whatever, you can declare the minor, it’s a small application. Some people do it before they enroll in those required classes, other people like me will wait until I completed everything because I’m thinking to myself “what if for some reason I won’t be able to complete them all and I’ve already declared the minor?” I’m just saving myself some paperwork! Hope that helps!

To rshie002: I’m sure they’ll open up because those courses are tough, but honestly, I do NOT suggest anyone doing 100A/B during their first summer before they even come to UCLA because you’re not adjusted yet. Those courses were like…I can’t describe it, lol.
Since you’re not a Psychology major, you will have to take those courses during the summer if you decide to pick UCLA, but think about it this way: you can take courses for your actual major all year long and then take Psychology courses over summer. I think it would be a nice contrasting point. But the decision is up to you! Good luck in whatever you may decide!

Hello! Thank you so much for doing this. I have a quick question: you mentioned in one of your previous posts that we accept SIR/pay $100 (if you have to) then we’re able to turn in our housing application. The thing is, I did all of those things except pay the $100. It never asked me to. Can you clarify what you meant by “(if you have to)”? Are some people exempt from this? I’m just wondering because myUCLA shows that my SIR was turned in, and the housing page shows that I turned in my housing app (paid $30), but I never paid the $100. Is this because my Residence for Tuition Classification is pending?

One more question! I’m a psych major without any volunteer/work/research experience due to personal reasons that will no longer apply once I transfer. I would love to get involved in school activities and research, but how do I make myself competitive among students with prior experience? You seem to be very involved, which I really admire! I remember reading that you recommend looking for research opportunities toward the end of fall, but is this strictly so that we won’t be overwhelmed from our transition to UCLA?

By the way, how hard are 100A/B classes? I keep hearing horror stories and I’m getting very intimidated. How can I prepare myself? Would reviewing stats help or is it better to just go into class and learn the material there?

Thank youuuuuuuuu!

@RheeL3- Is history considered an impacted major @ UCLA? I’ve heard of people switching into the major after they have transferred, is this true? Do you know anyone that has switched into the major? I know History is impacted when you want to get into the major directly, at UCLA. But is it still impacted once you are a UCLA student?

To xjennifer:
I said that because I found from last year that some people didn’t have to pay the SIR. My EFC is 0, and so is my best friend and another friend of ours, and none of us had to pay the $100, so don’t worry about it, you’re all set.

Like I told another CCer, try to get involved ASAP. If you’re not taking summer courses this summer at UCLA or at your CC, then try to get a Volunteer opportunity or small temp job, because it will hinder your chances to get into research. Again, what the researchers/lab managers ask themselves is: what can this student do for me/my project and what can this student bring to the table? If you don’t have any sort of experience with anything, how will they answer that question? Of course, you do have your interview where they will ask you things, but most of them require a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or even staff member here at UCLA, so start making relationships! Also, I recommend taking the Fall quarter to adjust, because you will need to. Also, because UCLA is on the quarter system, everything seems to fly by. As my roommate and I were chatting during breakfast earlier, I was like “Holy eff, it’s already week 6!” When you feel comfortable with the work load, and got your time adjusted, then start looking for research opportunities at those websites I provided in previous posts.

Psychology 100A&B are difficult. I don’t know “how” difficult they are because each student learns differently and such. For me, after each lecture I had to go to my room/library and review. It was actually pretty much everyday of review. The tests are …OMG. I feel that the tests (again, this depends on the professor) sometimes teach you on what the lecture was on/textbook covers, sometimes ask SUPER detailed questions and you’re like…“*** is THIS?!” I’ve seen it all. This is another reason why I don’t recommend jumping on research ASAP, although I do recommend you getting relationships on campus, because these two classes are tough, you’ll need all the time you can get. Review of previous stat courses may be nice, I was lucky enough to have friends who had already taken 100A&B so they hooked up their notes!!! Also, all those Stat things you learned, they review in the course, so…don’t stress yourself ahead of time. Save that for midterm time.

You’re welcome, if you have any more questions, just let me know! Good luck to you!

To lakers77: History is an impacted major, but I have heard students who switched into as well. With all the concerns (budget cuts, over-enrollment) going on, I strongly suggest you emailing the department. Something that may have passed before might not be the same this year, so get on it! Good luck!

Someone PMed me about Summer Sessions. (This is why I disabled my PMs; it’s not that I don’t mind, it’s just that I rather have people post their questions on here so everyone can see them!)

For Summer there are three sessions, but usually there’s no courses being offered during B Session, I have no idea why. Most of the “summer programs” FSP/TSP, URC, etc. are offered during Summer Session C.

The deadline for applying for financial aid for the summer sessions is TODAY, the 30th.

There is a $150 fee if you enroll in a course and then drop it.

There is a separate housing application if you want to live in the dorms/university apartments during the summer. Because its summer, there’s a bunch of options!

If you’re apart of AAP (I remember getting a letter a couple of weeks after I got my UCLA packet) I strongly suggest doing TSP, the Transfer Summer Program, it’s a great adjustment gap and if you’re lucky…it’s all paid for! I didn’t go because of personal issues that made me go overseas, but I heard it was great!

If you have any more questions regarding summer sessions, leave them down below!

Rheel3

I know you got a lot of financial aid, especially because of the regents, but was your efc pretty low? Mine is 0 and I just submitted my financial aid application for summer today and I’m nervous about not getting the two classes that I want. Does it take a long time to find out about what kind of financial aid we could get? I’m sure that the two classes I want will be filled next week if I don’t find out then… Thanks.

^
I said it in a post in the previous page, but my EFC is 0. But what FA really takes into consideration for summer sessions is the number of units. If you’re below half-time or half-time, you’ll get considerably less than a full time student. For example, I’m taking 16 units during summer sessions so I will be getting the max amount they can offer me and the work-study option (since I already have an on-campus job and they’re expecting me to get work-study for the summer). The award letters should come out in May, when you submitted your application, well at least for me, they told me they would follow up in May, not sure when, but if I get it I will let the thread know.

Oh okay. Is 16 units a lot? What is full time and what is half time?

So you enroll for your classes before you find out about financial aid? Does that mean you have to pay the fees when we enroll? I wouldn’t mind enrolling, finding out I can’t get much financial aid and then just drop my classes and pay the 150. However, I don’t want to try and enroll and find out I have to pay on the spot and be forced to drop them and pay the 150.

I really want to take summer courses there to start establishing my ucla GPA but I have no idea how many classes/units would be suitable.

Sorry, I see that 6 units is half time so 12 is full time. Do you think 12 would be too ambitious? I really need the money to even consider attending.

^
Summer enrollment began February 1st. Financial Aid application for Summer Sessions began April 1st. So yes, what’s expected is for students to enroll first and pay later, especially since FA is much later.

16 units is crazy. My counselor thought I was effing crazy. Summer Session is treated just like a normal quarter. For example, in the school year, you are considered a full-time student if you have 12 units or more and half-time if you have 6 unit or less, that’s the same with summer sessions. I am sure you will get financial aid, but you might have to take out loans…not sure how okay you are with that.

Like I said, it does take a bit of adjustment. It’s even tougher to adjust when you only have six weeks, so really think about it before you enroll, because either you’ll have to pay those $150 OR your GPA suffers.

Yeah, I understand. I would be willing to lose that 150 to just have a chance to go. Does the financial aid for full time cover the amount needed for housing and classes in your opinion?

^
I think it would with work-study. Keep in mind that it is difficult to find a work-study job and with that you’ll have to commit to working 10-20 hours per week on top of your classes, and that’s crazy if you’re doing full-time. Overall, my advice is not to do it, it’s crazy overload. Check my comments below!

Actually, now that I think about it, I really think you should do TSP. Since you’re EFC is 0, I’m sure you’ll be apart of AAP, and if you aren’t, I think you can call and ask them why not and they’ll add you.

Check this link out:

[F/TSP Curriculum](http://www.aap.ucla.edu/new_students/curriculum.html)

I recommend it because since your EFC is 0, you wouldn’t have to pay anything for it and you get the experience you want, plus you get to establish your GPA. With this program, because its dedicated for transfers, you’ll be able to adjust properly, at least I think so.

On the summer financial aid form, doe anyone know if we are

“Newly Admitted Undergraduate Student enrolled in College Summer Institute.” ?

What kind of courses to we get to take with that program? I am looking to knock out the last lower division courses for communications studies if I do summer session. I’ll probably stick to part time with those two courses.

^
It’s all on the site. Good luck to you!

To ideal2545: Go to the Financial Aid website: [UCLA Financial Aid Office | CAL GRANTS | LOANS | WORK STUDY | SCHOLARSHIP | PELL GRANTS](http://www.fao.ucla.edu)

On the right there should be a “Summer 2011 Information” and then it should lead you to the application, you’ll have to sign in first.

You’re newly admitted because you’re not going to enroll in CSI.

Oh and thank you Tiffany

I really appreciate your help :)
