Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

I am a Psychobiology major here at UCLA as a transfer student, as my first year comes to an end...I realize that around this time last year I was freaking out like most of you!

So if you have any questions, feel free to ask them below. Please note that I will NOT chance people.

I hope that other UCLA transfer students also add to the thread!

PS-Please keep in mind that I cannot check this everyday because midterms are coming up and my job is upping my hours. Please be patient, thanks!

-Tiffany.

You didn’t necessarily answer my question on the other thread so I’ll ask again here lol. How hard is it to switch majors to a NON impacted major after transferring in? And from what you know of psychology and cognitive science do you think it would be difficult to double major in both those fields or is it doable?

Oh and what were your stats when you transferred in? And I don’t know whether you’ll answer this and if not then it’s fine but were you able to view those URSA links before you found out your acceptance? The links i’m talking about are like the financial aid summary, documentation tracking, able to apply for housing, etc.

Thanks :)

Sorry about that, my internet was lagging big time, lol.

If it’s not impacted, then you can do that at Orientation. I don’t suggest, and I’m sure your OC won’t recommend it either, double-majoring, especially with Psychology. I’m not even sure if you could complete them in both years to be honest.

My stats when I transferred into UCLA: 4.0, Dean’s List, PTK President, 4,000 community service hours, internship at a psychologists practice, a lot of other things I can’t remember…lol.

Currently my stats are: 4.0, Regents, APA member, internship with a professor here, job with the Psychology department, and other things I’m blanking on probably.

Yes I was able to view URSA and stuff, but I never did the whole “email” thing. o__O;; Document tracking said “complete” but that depends on whether or not UCLA has all of your needed financial documents. I was able to apply for housing the day decisions were released.

Oh, and whoever said the Financial Aid doesn’t “do” your file unless you’ve been admitted is right. Why would they waste time, which they don’t have since right now they’re completing files for students who want to do summer sessions, if you’re not even admitted to UCLA?

You’re welcome!

Wow your stats are INCREDIBLE! No wonder you’re such a success up there

Thanks a lot for answering our questions, you gave us a lot of peace during this hectic time lol.

Tiffany,

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. First, does UCLA live up to its reputation for being a cutthroat, competitive environment? Second, how long did it take you to adjust to the quarter semester, or were you intimate with it already?

I’m happy to help actually. I know I was biting on my nails, and you guys have it tougher…having to wait longer! I have a friend who works in Undergrad Admissions and she even said they were lagging, hahaha.

Hi Justin!

No problem! UCLA is what you make of it. Of course there’s always going to be someone who’s showing off and all, but honestly, if that’s not your “thing”, as in, comparing stats and whatever…don’t worry. There’s some that are and some that aren’t. I came from the semester system so the quarter change was a bit…odd. It took me about three weeks to realize I wasn’t going to be able to procrastinate like I usually did in CC, especially since midterms are in week five. With all the work and reading, you’ll get into it…fast.

hey. i have questions too. my major is aerospace engineering.

im kinda slow learner. i really need to take time and put efforts to understand stuffs. i could only manage 3-4 courses(12-16units) per semester. would i sturggle under the quarter system, which most UC’s run on.
btw, im relieved to hear that financial aid summary showing and tracking being completed is a good sign. i have tests coming up next week and havent been able to study. i wish they could give me the answer already so i can focus on my school work.

I meant to ask…How competitive is UCLA psych?
Thanks!

To passwordis123: Engineering here is tough, super competitive students! I think you would have a harder time adjusting to it, because honestly speaking–professors expect SO much from you. It’s as if they deem all you have time for is THEIR course, I know it sounds ridiculous but sometimes it feels that way. Take the minimum, which is recommended for transfers anyways, 12-13 units MAX and see how you do with it. There’s also tutoring and you can always form study groups! Best of luck! I hope the document tracking trick doesn’t fail this year, hahaha.

To Cactusbass: Psychology is one of the top competitive programs at UCLA. It’s getting harder and harder to get into it each year. As the years pass, the minimum set GPA and everything else gets raised compared to the previous years.

Hey, I’m a Political Science major that transferred in the fall.

I just wanted to add something about double majoring…

I think it depends on what you’re doing. In my fall quarter I took a Geography class that really blew me away, and in winter quarter I realized I loved both fields equally. I will be ATTEMPTING to complete the double major but if I want to graduate by next spring I need to take summer school and 4 classes each quarter from here on out. I’m taking 4 classes right now and it’s honestly not too time consuming even if one is a research seminar. However, if the double major was something like psychology and cognitive science, doing 4 classes each quarter could get too stressful.

In my experience, I don’t know how I ever did the semester system. The quarter system is so much more efficient in that the material stays fresh and interesting. I know that when the semester still had 1/4 left to go I wanted stab my eyes out.

Rheel3-what about research opportunities at the semel institute?

^
I wouldn’t be able to answer that question since I’m unfamiliar with it. However I did apply as a work-study student but as far as a research opportunity, I’m not too sure, sorry. Your best bet is to contact them directly and ask them. Good luck!

Another double majoring question - do you know anything about adding an impacted major as a second major?

^
Depends on what major, but highly doubtful.

any advice on related minors that dont require a ton of extra coursework?

^
If you’re minoring you’re better off. Most minors have the same requirements, two major classes and then doing six other classes (if I’m remembering correctly).

some community colleges offers psych 100a and 100b equivalents. Can one use those equivalents in their community college to satisfy ucla 100a and 100b for psychology?

@killerforhire: Thanks for that! I originally wanted to major in cognitive science alone but seeing that UCLA has such a great psych program I wouldn’t want to let it go if I get admitted! Especially since I know how impacted it is and if I ever change my mind I wouldn’t be able to switch back. Would you consider cogsci and psych to be similar? The reason why I thought double majoring in those two fields would be possible is because they’re kinda in the same area and I would think many classes would overlap.

@rheel3

i heard that there are 12 classes (not including the pre reqs u took at CC but including psych 100A&B) you need to take to complete your psychology degree at ucla is that true?

I’ve never heard of there being a CC course(s) equivalent to Psychology 100A&B. No way.
I’ve never seen one person who has transferred in with those two completed, it’s just not possible. Perhaps you’re thinking about Psychology 10, which would be equivalent to Psychology 100 in CC.

To uclakid: Here you go: http://www.psych.ucla.edu/undergraduate/advising/majors-minors/psychtransfers</a>

It has all the requirements there!
