I’m a first year OOS at UVA and I was just wondering does anyone have any questions about anything involving UVA?
Aw, that’s very nice of you! There are some older students and parents who have been fielding questions for a while now.
How have your first couple of months gone so far?
How much does being an OOS legacy count for? Do they really consider OOS legacy students as in state?
@pennhopeful22 This is covered in the FAQs on our website and I’ve discussed it on the blog. It’s not really a question to ask a first year student (or any student) at UVA.
OOS legacies are not given Virginia residency. They pay out of state tuition. We do acknowledge the legacy status in our office, but no one else at UVA does.
I would like to know more about the food in the dining halls. Would someone who avoids processed foods be able to find enough to eat? Are the dining halls open convenient hours?
Also the number of vegetarian/vegan options?
In light the fact that 2/3 of students are from Virginia and many probably already have friends classmates when they arrive have you found it difficult to assimilate with the instate students
@burghdad I am also an OOS student (from Ohio). I did not find it very difficult at all to assimilate with the in-state students. For the first week or so everybody wanted to go touch base with their high school friends, but from that point on it mostly became dorm/club/class friends. I was pretty nervous about being OOS at a public university but I have found the social transition to be a great experience.
The work load is harder than I expected but I’m having a blast!
@prodesse The dining halls are actually quite good. You should have no problem trying to find non-processed food. Also you can send the dining hall your nutritional needs and they are happy prepare special meals for you.
@burghdad The first two weeks of school I did feel like and outsider because it seemed like everyone already knew everybody except me. But living in a suite really helped me meet new people and after the first week the ‘lets try to find highschool’ phase goes away.
@MooMoo121121 @seaotter17 thanks for taking the time to give feedback and congratulations for getting into UVA oos. That is quite an accomplishment.
