Any reason I should get a laptop?

I would not use it to take notes in classes. And there's nowhere I would take it...I don't see the point of that on a college campus. There are computers everywhere. I've seen people use them in like the dining areas, but I wouldn't have any reason to go there anyway. I'm not going to eat campus food.

So any reason then that I'm not aware of?

I'd like to build my own desktop. It would be cheaper and more powerful. And fun. :D

Well, it can sometimes be useful in a pinch. For example sometimes I got lost and used my laptop with a map of campus for a quickie.

It can also be good entertainment anywhere, but yeah, in your case it doesn't really look like you may need it. Maybe if your friends ever want together to work on something, or if you happen to have a class or two further ahead that require laptops, but I can't think of any other reason.

Be sure to think it carefully, though.

If your not going to use it to take notes or work on it in a group discussion, then its perfectly fine to use a desktop (you should get something like a USB key or a portable hard drive with this route). Desktops are great; don't get stolen, more power for intense applications like games, and are relatively inexpensive. Laptops are for mobility. Good luck.

moving a desktop from your dorm/apartment back to your house can be a hassle. you also can't fly with desktops.

you can just build a desktop first, and if you ever need a laptop then just buy a cheap one.

yes yes. laptops very nice.

Why would I bring my computer back home?

...when you move out of your dorm for the summer, maybe?

But my house already has three computers. I wouldn't need to bring one home.

Unless you plan on living in the dorms or somewhere else, you have to take your computer home when school ends.

I don't think he's going to be living on campus.

But basically if he's doing anything other than buying a house (which I doubt), he's going to have to move out and back in over the summer/fall.

Well, you can usually find storage space nearby. I've heard of people doing that, instead of taking all of their furniture home each summer.

But you wouldn't leave your computer there. Otherwise you can't use it over the summer. =P

Oh, duh. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that post. I am going to live in dorms, but yeah must have been late at night when I wrote that. lol

Anyway, a desktop isn't that much of a pain to move. Just for summer, big deal.

Between the two I am a desktop fan. So if you don't need it for class (there are some programs where they assume everyone has one and brings it to class), then go with the desk top. However, there is the issue of meetings away from your room, were it may be convenient to have a laptop.
