Any Recs for mid level Engineering Grad schools?

I'm realistic and really won't get into some top level school which is fine, I'm more concerned with going someplace that fits me most of all and doesn't make me end up $100,000 in debt. Since as a Master's with average grades I'm sure there is no chance I'll get any funding, though I'd be curious to hear if anyone with minimum creditionals ever got funding to start. I know there are opportunities after your first semester if you can prove yourself.

With that in mind I'm pursuing a MS for Mechanical Engineering, I'd like to end up at a school with a focus on Renewable Energy if possible. That's a bit besides the point though.

Main question really is anyone apply and get accepted to a mid range school with normal credentials (IE 3.0 GPA/1200 GRE/Normal Undergrad Experience). I do have a couple things I think will work in my favor but they won't be drastic game changers(Good Rec's and plenty of leadership experience, I'm a bit older at 27 so I guess that comes with age).

I also didn't take the GRE but I'm expecting to get around the 500/700+ mark if the practice tests are any indicator.

Thanks, I'd love to hear from anyone actually in a program not random theorycraft. Just as example a few schools that caught my eye have been Michigan State/Colorado State, so in that range I suppose.
