Any Running Start-ers care to share? +various questions!

Hi!

So, I'm a full time RS student (junior) and I've been seriously set on getting into UW since my freshman year. Some things about me:

-Like I said, full time, and with the way things are looking, I plan to graduate with my high school as well as associates degree simultaneously.

-Did girls golf, varsity, for 2 years but have stopped this year due to conflicting schedules.

-Had a 4.0 for freshman and sophomore years of high school, invited to National Honors, but never really cared to PAY in order to join such an organization.

-Currently in the Honors program at my college, have a 3.88 avg (hiccuped during first quarter)

-Plan to be a student ambassador for the 2011-2012 school year

-Volunteer with Jr. Achievement teaching elementary aged kids about economics

-Plan to volunteer more during the summer

During mt last 2 quarters, I took two under 100 level math classes, 98 & 99: Algebra, just like I would be taking if I had stayed at my high school. Now, I'm in Precalc 1 and will likely continue onto Precalc 2 and stop there. Is this a wise decision? Should I take stats instead? Should I continue onto Calculus?

...With that, I am not a math/science oriented person. I am definitely language centered, and my passion is Spanish. Currently, I have taken 3 years, starting in 8th grade, and am currently enrolled in Span 123. By June of 2012 I will be finishing my college's Spanish series, graduation for 223. Since 1 quarter = 1 year, I guess I'll have 7 years of Spanish. Dunno if they'll look at it like that, but I plan on emphasizing my interest in culture and languages.

I plan to take chem/bio, some more psychologies, and 2 more quarters of English.

Sorry for the amount of writing, but I haven't really had the chance to talk to many full timers like myself who are going into or are already at UW. What do you think of me as a candidate? What has your experience been like? Do you know a Running Start student who has gotten in?

Also; Can I give myself a cushion by applying as a freshman as well as a transfer student?

Thanks so much!!

Your grades sound really good.

I can answer this part "Also; Can I give myself a cushion by applying as a freshman as well as a transfer student? "

No – you can only apply as one of these, and you don’t get to choose which one. If you are applying for the fall after you graduate, you apply as a freshman. If you are applying at any other time (like if you take a gap year for example), you are a transfer.

Hi! I’m a full-time Running Start student, and I’ll be an incoming sophomore at UW in the fall.

I chose not to graduate with my AA, but as the person above me replied, you apply as a freshman regardless of how many credits you have (or degree). You seem like a great candidate though, so best of luck! Remember to keep your essay honest. :)

As for whether or not to continue onto calculus . . . I’m not sure. I finished up to calc III at my community college, but that’s because I wanted to get as many prereq classes down for my major as I can. I guess it depends on what you plan to major in, but I always think it’s a good idea to continue with math. Sorry, I don’t really have the best answer/advice to your situation. :l

Im a just saying that at my school it was nearly impossible to get into uw without being in calculus BC, it pretty much made your acceptance a sue in.
Now people who only had AB calculus it went both ways

Hi! I am currently a full time running start student (senior), I am just about to finish up my last quarter & will be receiving my AA at the same time I graduate from HS in June. I have been accepted into UW for fall 2011, as a pre-science student. I have about a 3.6 high school gpa and a slightly higher CC gpa. This shows how much running start does help getting accepted into UW, considering my HS gpa is a lot lower than other students that got rejected. Also, I’m white… which it’s pretty well known how hard it is for us to get into UW. I believe if you stay on the path you’re going, you’ll for sure be accepted! For me running start has been the best decision of my life, I will probably only have 2-3 (3 years only because the biology major is so rigorous) years left until my BA, and I get to skip past those 300-700 student 100 & 200 level classes.

There are a few things I would’ve done differently,
First - Make sure all your classes from CC transfer over to your pre-major or major.
Second - Finish sets of classes (calc 1, 2, & 3) at your CC. If you were to go and try to take calc 3 at UW, it’s going to be very difficult after taking 1 & 2 at CC.
Third - Put your college GPA before your HS. Your college GPA will carry on with you to UW, and if you are looking into any type of grad school it will be super hard to bring up your GPA if you have 100 & 200 level classes bringing it down. College GPA is most likely looked at higher by UW admissions anyway.

Anyways, don’t be stressed about getting into UW, history shows they accept running start students as long as you aren’t just taking pointless/easy classes w/ mediocre grades.

Good luck, & let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for all the feedback and advice, I really appreciate it! It feels good to know that there are others in the same situation :)

I suppose my dilemma with choosing my math classes stems from the fact that I have 3 majors in my head… Education, Psychology, Spanish. None of those to me scream math and science orienter, but now that jessy mentioned making sure that all my pre-majors transfer, I’ll be super careful to take classes that get me prepped.

On another note, what went in to everyone’s repertoire of extra carrics?

Thanks so much for all the answers you guys!

Also! Has everyone taken the ACT? The SAT?
I’m taking the SAT in June, and I heard that if say for example I don’t like my scores I can retake them, but that will probably be around December. Can I send those in?

Does the ACT really even matter?

Yes, you can retake, but you might miss priority scholarship deadlines. Check and make sure.

Edit: ACT isn’t important.

As long as you take the SAT or ACT, you’ll be okay. [Though you obviously do need one of them.]

In response to the person that said the ACT wasn’t important, that is relatively true if you take the SAT. Many people I know did better on the ACT than the SAT though. The ACT [from what i was told] has a tiny bit of a different format style than the SAT [even though it essentially tests the exact same things]. I’m also almost positive that if you take both colleges will look at whichever scores are higher.

Sweet, gonna take the SAT in June here, and I guess I’ll be more or less set to go…

jessyawwyeah has some great advice! Might I also add that you should be seriously considering your major/back up majors when you transfer in with a lot of credits. You don’t have the 1-2 years cushion that most freshmen do in deciding/applying for their major. You need to do well in pre-reqs and apply for your major pretty much within the first 2 quarters at UW, because you’ll be a junior in standing.
