Any Scholarships Left?

Any scholarships still open for .. application?

We are also still looking. My son just turned in an application today for a local scholarship ($500). I have seen a few still listed at fastweb, so you might check there. I think the big ones may all be past, but there are still a few hanging around out there.

Good luck!

tlaktan,
There is still a lot of aid out there. Contact your school's career & college center right away as most of the smaller local scholarships are coming up in the next 1 to 4 weeks. If your school doesn't have CCC, then go to your GC. If you still don't get any help, then start contacting your local Rotary, Kiwanis, Women's Clubs, etc. (Look in your local newspaper to find a list of the local clubs--they put notices in once a week about meetings, and such--to get ideas and phone numbers.)
Don't forget to make use of the internet too. Google "scholarship" and any other related words you can think of. Also, you can check out other high school and college websites and check what they have listed for their kids.
Finding the scholarships can be time-consuming but is definitely worth it. It helps if someone is able to assist you. My D has received $17,000 so far. I have spent a lot of time helping find them and then helping her put together the apps.
Good luck!

metermaid,

I hope that you don't mind me asking, but what are your D's stats? Did she recieve any writing scholarships/essay contests?

vtoodler,
no problem--she's straight A's--4.44, 1510 SAT's (V800, M710). She's taken 7 honors & 5 AP classes. She's also been very active in community service--4 years in Key Club--(founding member, treasurer, Lieutenant Governor over 15 clubs, and president this year.) She's also been on swim team and student senate, NHS. She also tutors. As you might imagine, not a lot of time left for her in a day!

Most of the scholarships she applied to are based on 4 things--academics, service, recommendation letters, and an essay between 200 to 1000 words. Some of the bigger ones she’s won are the Discover-Tribute (juniors only), Target, Elks—local and nat’l, local Free & Accepted Masons, state PTA, Kiwanis, and Nat’l Merit (go anywhere one).

Many of the scholarships left now are essay driven. I think these usually get a lot more applicants, as the others are somewhat self-selecting. Since she has 4 AP’s now, she hasn’t had much time to enter ones that she’d have to do a lot of outside reading/prep work for.

Best advice is to read the websites thoroughly and be sure to answer the prompts. If they give past winning essays, read through them to see what type of student and writing style appeals to them. But most importantly, apply to everything you think you might have a chance at! My D has probably applied to 60+ so far and we have another 25 or so sitting in the file to do.

Good luck. metermaid
