I’ve been trying to start my college essays, but I have absolutely no idea what to write about. I don’t know what would make me stand out from others and what college admissions counselors would want to read about. I play tennis and bassoon, I’m in marching band, mock trial, and other activities. I also work at a pizza place, tutor math, and volunteer. However, I feel like all of those are cliché topics. What do I do?
To the admissions officers (and/or anyone that views your application), the whole point of the essay is to learn more about you as a person. They have the rest of the applications to see your achievements, hobbies, and test grades, but take the time to make your essay really shine and show YOU. Your best bet is probably taking an event in your life and described how it changes you as a person. I’ve seen a really great one a few years ago about a girl who wrote about how going to Costco was a family tradition–every weekend or something like that; and in the essay she wrote about Costco as an analogy to her life/personality. She got accepted into some major Ivies (although that may not be your goal).
Essentially, just keep in mind that the essays are there to describe your personality in a different way. Write about something they can’t see just by looking at the rest of your application, and you should be good! Just keep it honest, sincere, and personal.
