Hey guys! Does anyone know of any really good summer programs (in the continental US) that would help me get into a top school and would also be fun? I got offered to go to the law&trial program offered by Envision at Stanford. I know it’s mostly just for money and it’s not a big accomplishment but if I get financial aid, I might attend (I spoke to some people in the program who said they loved it). Are there any other summer programs or anything you guys know of that would actually be beneficial for college applications? I live in NY but i’ll travel for it if the program offers dorms to students. Would prefer to keep the cost low but I can afford a program that’s around $2,000. I’m mostly interested in law and business but I’m definitely open to other programs with medicine or really anything in general. Thanks! Any help would be great
There are no summer programs that can magically improve your chances of admission.
Look for activities and programs that are interesting to YOU.

Moreover, it’s completely free! Good luck with your search
Colleges want to see you do something productive over the summer, be it work, babysit for your family, take a class, go to math camp.
Use these programs to explore an area to see if you are interested. Maybe you love law. Maybe you hate it. But attending will help you figure that out.
Question? Does it look bad for an applicant to only attend summer programs at state schools (e.g. UC) when planning on applying to some private local and OOS colleges?
No, it does not look bad.
Summer programs should be used to develop a talent, a skill, or an outside interest, and by doing so you may enhance the picture of yourself that emerges from your resume and essays in your applications. It can help you in that regard, but not directly for having attended a program in an of itself.
For example, assume you are interested in music—maybe you are in band, or choir, or play in a garage band. Participating in a summer program on music will not necessarily impress Admissions, but it certainly enhances your demonstration of commitment to music, which may make you an interesting applicant. Likewise, assume you are a mock trial, Model UN, or debate person; attending a program on a related topic in and of itself won’t help you but it does demonstrate that you are truly interested in that area and again may make you stand out a little more vis a vis an applicant with just a tired list of random ECs on their application.
The other big payoff from a summer program is you may attend such a program and through that decide you are NOT truly interested in that area and save yourself some anguish down the road. For example, maybe you enjoyed mock trial at your high school, but attending that three-week legal summer program convinces you being a lawyer is not your calling.
