im class of 2005 and will major in some type of engineering (possibly mechanical/aerospace). will i have time for a job? im aware of the excellent co-op program, but chances are, ill still need (or need my first two years) a steady income. i know this is based on my efficiency and the number of classes i take, but lets pretend we are working with the average Cornellian Joe.

and if so, where is a good place to find a job? Cornell surroundings are pretty rural, so will i have to commute to downtown ithica?

And I dunno if you would have time for a job. I didnt even try it because i wanted to concentrate on schoolwork, and I have needed all the time i can get.

i had 16 credits (biology and orgo among them)
worked 25 hours/week
was leader in 2 organizations + members in a few other
tonssss of EC

--made dean's list.

but, i didn't have much of a social life (maybe went out to frat parties twice all semester)

it's doable. just have to learn how to manage your time. my advice is to not work your first semester so you can see how much studying + etc you can handle on top of working, and whatever you do, DON'T work in a dining hall. unless you enjoy that type of thing. work at the library or service center so you can at least do your hmwk when things are slow.

Pledging takes up a few nights a week, but mostly on weekends. Some ppl say that its like taking an extra 3-credit class, but im not sure thats accurate. Ill be able to answer such questions better in about 8 weeks, when im done pledging.

would it be wrong to work your ass off at home before going to college? then you'll get there with a full wallet and if you can manage your money, you could make out all right? i know that is easier said than done.

Absolutely not!! Thats exactly what I did. I was super stingy pretty much all of my high school years, and worked really hard through senior year and the summer before this year. Now I havent worked an hour since ive gotten to cornell and i still have plenty of money left. Honestly, I havent incurred that many expenses while at school. I mean, room is paid for, food is paid for, books are paid for. The only stuff I ever have to buy is expendable stuff like soap, toothpaste, etc, and random junk like new clothing. Every now and then I'll want to go out to eat, and I'll hit up Louie's a few times a week. But other than that there really isnt anything that I spend money on. So if you save well before school it should last you a long time.
