<p>My RH is a grad student from Australia. He is looking to get a PhD in music (I forget the exact concentration/focus/whatever) and he said he came here because it was one of the better programs. Don't know much else about it.</p>

<p>I know the music composition department is excellent, and I know a current grad student who has had the fortune of collaborating with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Amy Dissanayake. Also, the department has Shulamit Ran and Marta Ptaszynska. A while back, I was seriously considering pursuing music composition here, though my interests now have changed.</p>

<p>Music theory and ethnomusicology here are also well regarded. This being the U. of C., the theoretical subjects always are the best, while the practical ones (music emsembles) are lacking a bit.</p>
