I was waitlisted at Loyola and accepted to Goucher. Should I just go with Goucher? Does anyone know when you would find out if you got off the waitlist?

Loyola really had a bump in apps this year. If you really prefer there, let them know. Otherwise, Goucher has a lot to offer and is a great school.

I have heard from different people that Loyola received about a 25% increase in applications this year, this is probably why so many people have gotten waitlisted. The thing is many people apply waiting on financial aid, and when they dont get it they dont go, and also many apply just to apply so they have many options but they really dont wanna go there. Call the school let them know your situation, if you really wanna go there you’ll most likely get in.

Son is on the select waitlist and heard nothing…too bad…looks like its Gettyburg.

Many schools received staggering #s of applications this year, surprising quite a few of them. There aren’t suddenly 30% more 18 year olds; it is that kids are applying to 15 schools when they used to apply to 8.

That said, each of them still can only go to one school. So the yield is going to have to drop at a lot of schools, too, and that means they will be accepting more off their wait list.

We visited one school last week where they said if you were waitlisted, to write a letter right away to the school you wanted to go to the most and make it very clear that if they take you, you will go there. A lot of the waitlisted people get accepted somewhere else and accept that—and Loyola & all the other No 1 choices still have to fill their classes. They want to know you will come if accepted.

Did anyone from the WL hear anything?

S just got an email from the admissions counselor telling him to call her because she wanted to “discuss his application”.

I don’t want him to get his hopes up but…he just was offered acceptance off another WL last night!

He left a message but he’s not going to get much sleep tonight.

He’s in. S got same message today and was offered a spot. Congrats!

Loyola University Maryland is not an easy school to get into. Its a tier 1 school. People at my school with 2 or more AP test where denied. Loyola may of gotten more applications this year becuase they are getting better. I applied to Loyola early action and got accepted. I think the major you pick at Loyola makes a huge difference, becuase of course their Business programs is one of the best in the country. I applied to the engineering program and I had the math and science skills. Their also trying to increase diversity so that may of affected acceptance. Congratulations to everyone admitted, I personally can’t wait for Loyola.

When you talk to the admissions counselors be confident, and let them know your interested and want to attend. Anyway if your not admitted don’t feel bad. I know someone who was not accepted to Loyola but was to Penn state main campus. I was denied to 2 colleges, but I still had others. Is not the end of the world. Plenty of time to transfer if you feel bad about not getting in later on.

Anyway this year applying to college was difficult. A lot of people applied to George Washington University for example. It was crazy, after seeing people being denied with 5 Ap classes and good SAT scores I knew I was denied.

Yep, S was offered a spot off the WL…the day before he got off Providence College’s WL but they want an answer by tomorrow.

He now has 16 hours left to make the biggest decision he’s ever made.

We have visited and toured over 30 colleges in the past 3 years, and here’s my two cents for what it’s worth.

If my son hadn’t gotten accepted at VU, he would have happily attended Loyola. He didn’t even apply to Providence, although it’s in a very nice area of Rhode Island, because of its very strong and well-known reputation as a major party school. Not that my son is a reclusive bookworm, but he had heard from former HS classmates that Providence takes partying to an extreme level. We have also heard of kids transferring out because the non-stop partying made it hard for them to focus on their academics.

Loyola is a great school on the rise. In 5 years, it’s going to be an even harder admit than it was this year. Lots of money being pumped into the school, new buildings, web site, admission materials, status change from college to university…this is an institution of higher learning that any high school student can be proud to attend.

^^^ I agree with Kelly37. Daughter graduating from BC this year. Son wanted to go further away from home. Villanova not an option because they do not have a School of Education. From day one, Loyola has been top notch. I have no doubt that they are on the rise, and rightly so. Both S and D wanted to be in, or near a city. Boston is my first love, but I would take Baltimore over Providence any day.

car1954,

I have a sophomore daughter at BC and we love it too

My son’s guidance counselor told us months ago Loyola was a school to watch and accordingly, many kids from son’s HS have chosen to attend. I would also take Baltimore over Providence and son thought the same.

Congrats on your daughter’s graduation!

Thanks Kelly 37. Two graduations in one year. Kudos to your son’s guidance counselor.
We found Loyola primarily because we were looking for another Jesuit school. We didn’t expect S to love it because he wanted a big rah-rah school. He felt comfortable right from the start.
Good luck to you too! Start saving for graduation festivities at BC…:):)

Ah! Congrats to your sons! I’m so jealoussss! I hope I get in off the waitlist soon I’d really love to go to Loyola. :/

They have good teachers at Loyola and are getting more. I knew about loyola years ago. My brother applied around 3 years but just ended up going to Georgetown of course. Someone I knew around 2 years ago applied there also and goes there now. How I said before in Maryland the top colleges are John Hopkins,University of Maryland college park, and then Loyola stands next to them. There’s not a bunch of good colleges known in Maryland. Since their opening to weight listed people I guess some people just applied and went some where else. I’m really interested in seeing the class of 2014 at Loyola. I couldn’t make it to the student open house during April unfortunately. All I see at loyola is opportunity for the top students. They will need students to help with research projects hopefully.

Whew…what a whirlwind.

Last night as soon as we got home from PC S got ready for baseball at a minor league stadium…his team won and they’re going to the states!

He had to work (his summer job started already on weekends, he works at a country club), so he woke up and said “Loyola”. I almost started crying…because I don’t think I’ll see him much, and H wasn’t happy, wanted PC.

Half hour later he calls from work and says “I changed my mind, I want to go to PC”.

Meanwhile, I’m driving 4.5 hours to pickup older son from college (one way)…we finally got to talk to him and he admitted that he “changed his mind” because he thought he had disappointed us. He say me tearing up and made the choice he thought WE wanted. We assured him that he should go with his gut, where he really wanted to be, where he would be happiest. He said the ubiquitous crosses and portrait of the pope at PC freaked him out as well as Western Civ EVERY DAY for 2 years, so he really wants Loyola.

I’m so happy for him…he needs to go where he sees himself and that’s Loyola, so it’s done. Maybe if PC had given him an extra day he would have chosen differently, but he was under so much pressure. I think Loyola is what he wants…when we were there he didn’t want to leave, he loved it, so he’s a greyhound and I’ll miss him terribly.

I think I’ll get another puppy. ;)

PC and loyola are on the same level, look at the Princeton reviews. The smart thing to do was to pick the school you liked the most. No idea why he felt like he was going to disappoint you thought. I personally actually wanted to go to school far but that didn’t work out. Normally going to college you want to experience a new place. Anyway its not like you wont see him during vacations and a whole summer every year. You may miss him but it better to know he’s fine where he’s going.

Anyway if he feels bad just tell him there’s nothing to feel bad about. Loyola and PC are on the same level when it comes to colleges. And on top of that Loyola changed their name to Loyola University for a reason. Their trying to open up to more majors and subjects. Loyola is investing in many things trying to get an upper hand. Pretty much loyola is going to get more better than it is now.

Does anyone know if Loyola is offering merit or scholarship money to people accepted off the WL?

I know PC was not.

Congrats to you S, momtravels. We have a 9 hour drive to Loyola, if that makes you feel better! Where are you from?
I’m sure your son will be happy there.

We’re from southwest CT, it’s about a 5 hour drive, but it is on that trainwreck known as the Jersey Turnpike and over the GWB.

I think I have to find an alternate route, it’s a horrible drive.
