i need a tanning buddy! lol i dont want to be the whitest person on campus

@uchappy YES! we must fight against paleness and the California sun will be our greatest ally! :))))))))

Anything- I’ve been considering it, but I don’t have anything set in stone yet. It would sure be a heck of a lot better then sticking around Riverside county another Summer! It is wayyyy too hot and boring down here!

@UChappy- AGREED. I’m pretty lucky though, I can tan quickly! I might just end up laying out on the field where you can see the ocean…haha. But for reals though, I really want to go to the beach and boardwalk!

I love the beach! that’s why I hate living in the IE gas is way to high to drive out there

I’ve been considering summer school too I just want to wait until I do my SIR before I make a decision

UCSC is my first choice, even though I know I could do better (I could have went their after high school and my mom keeps telling me Davis is more of my level.) It is the closest UC to me as I live in the Silicon Valley and I love hiking in the various parks in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The thing is… the only class left for me to take to transfer is math but I may not be able to take it in the spring quarter… so I wonder is there any chance they will let me in for winter quarter. I know some people transferred in the winter quarter at UCSC even though there isn’t winter admission…?

I visited The Village back in January when I visited my friends. I knew I would love it, when I was researching on the housing options. If people decide to live at The Village, definitely join the PICA (Progam in Community and Agroecology) if you’re interested in sustainability and organic gardening. Plus, it’s a great way to meet friends and eat healthy food.

Urghhh… Santa Cruz is beautiful, but I’m deterred by the wetness of it all. I see photos of the fog rising through the redwoods, and while that’s lovely and awe-inspiring, it’s the sort of thing that I wouldn’t want to walk to class through.

I’m a socal girl, I need my summer sun 24/7/365.

Also, I feel like it would be too cold to be very active, and then I’d end up getting fat. SD/SB/LA force you to wear fewer clothes (weather, and all) - it keeps me motivated at the gym. Or else, yeah - I could kiss my abs goodbye.

What wetness? I can count the number of times it rained this winter on one hand!

That said, NorCal usually has wet winters. Santa Cruz has a redwood forest that relies on that fog you spoke of and fog is more of a summer thing in the early mornings and evenings. It can come at different times too, but it certainly isn’t as wet as you seem to imagine. You might feel a slight dampness to the air, but you’re not going to get soaked and it’s definitely not that often. Fog walks are a blast, though, for those who like walking in the forest.

The weather on campus is often very different from the rest of the city. Honestly, I sweat most of the time, but I have issues with temperatures above 80F (funny considering I grew up inland Bay Area where summers are always 100F+). I actually partially chose UCSC because I knew the coast weather would be much more pleasant than the horrid heat I get at home.

That said, maybe it would be too much for you. Everyone is different and if you truly hate wet winters, stay away from NorCal. Although that’s assuming next winter won’t be nearly as dry as this one has been. Everyone should be where they’re most comfortable and in all seriousness, weather is something to take into consideration :)

=) i love winter, but i hate spring heading to summer since it gets to hot down in socal. =P even though hot down here is like 85 average lolol.

I feel pretty excited to go to ucsc if i dont go to irvine, such a nice place.

@Kender

Oh! I didn’t know that it doesn’t rain much.

I also don’t mind the fog terribly. It’s a bit dreary, but in a romantic way. I mostly just can’t stand the cold. I have a high surface area to volume ratio (read: lanky/tall/thin) and I am basically always cold. I find that I feel best at 70ish. If it’s below 60, I basically go into hibernation.

How are the beaches in SC? Even if they are rocky, I just like to be near the ocean. One huge draw for me with respect to UCSD is the close proximity to an amazing beach. The air just smells amazing at that school.

^^Asphyxiac. If you want to go to a school next to a beach, go to Santa Barbara. Their campus is–literally–on the beach. Here’s the photo of the campus: http://www.ucsb.edu/images/design-2010/slideshow/4-campus-air.jpg

The white buildings you see in the photo, in the bottom left but next to the lagoon on the left side is one of the dorms. If you want to wake up to the sound of waves crashing onto the shore, this is the school.

No, it just hasn’t rained that much. It’s supposed to rain a lot in the winter. It’s a NorCal thing. We’ve just been having a very dry year (my home area has been having a dry last several years). That’s why I was saying you might want to avoid NorCal if you don’t like rain :). Was neat last year. Really early in the morning, we got a really small layer of snow on the benches at Porter (don’t know about rest of campus) and then flurries all the rest of the day. It was amazing! I wish it had been this quarter, would have been a great send off seeing such a rare little bit of snow this low.

I’m tiny and short… as some people put it: I have nothing to keep me warm. But my body doesn’t understand the concept of “stop producing heat.” My friends love me in the winter cause I radiate warmth.

Have to agree with lawlking about UCSB. The beach is close here at UCSC (and not rocky, just very touristy because of the Boardwalk), but not THAT close. I can see the ocean from campus, but getting to the beach requires a vehicle or taking a bus. Sounds like you might like Santa Barbara a lot more. SoCal weather and a close beach :)

@lawlking

SB is beautiful, but I don’t know if I could hang with all of the IV craziness that goes on there. I have a friend who graduated from SB (engineering, but he’s not your typical EE major - blond surfer beach bum type), and he’s told me some wild stories, lol.

Also, they don’t offer much in the way of my major.

:(

UCSD, UCSB and UCSC all have the draws of the beach…Gotta say though, I love UCSC because there’s just something so rustic and breath taking about walking through a forest but being able to look out and see the ocean (provided its not raining or foggy)…Love it!

^^ and out of all of those UCSC probably has the cleanest beach

Is it sad that I haven’t actually been to any of those beaches, including UCSC? My family never travels much…I’m going to make my boyfriend take me there as soon as I get back up there in a few weeks. I really want to see what the beach and boardwalk have to offer, considering I’ve already seen some of the forested area!

Don’t let UCSB’s picture of the school fool you. That is the same one I had sitting above my desk for motivation. However, there is a reason that picture was taken far away. In fact, I suspect they may have digitally enhanced the outlining beach…

In actuality, yes, the beach is super close if you live on campus. I can walk to the beach any time I want and from my dorm it would take five minutes. But the beach is gross…
It is really nothing to brag about. Campus point especially…shudder
Some students act like they don’t see the nasty stuff that washes ashore and just sits there attracting bugs.

http://media.independent.com/img/photos/2007/05/22/ellwood_bluffs_t479.jpg?6626f76dcd72edc2e28f46812c7026450162bdb2

^This isn’t out beach but this is pretty much what it looks like. Girls actually lay out there towels and read and tan right next to these gross piles of I don’t know what…

And IV has those stupid shoes tossed over electric cables like this:

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumblarge_195/1192359818EQY59Y.jpg

The streets around campus and in IV are in need of repair. There are potholes. Some apartments have graffiti. Bums wander around but they are affectionately known by nicknames like the Pirate and I’ve seen students talking to them. Once I saw a bum on campus at night time just walking around. On campus, some of the bathrooms are old and in need of painting over years and years of writing in the stalls. The mini parks within IV are small and full of weeds.

So is SB glamorous like the picture? No. What do you expect with a bunch of 20 somethings densely packed together. You should see how some of them keep their rooms- how do you expect them to upkeep the campus, beach, and IV apartments?

Just keeping it real. I wish there were someone to tell me all this back when I was applying to schools…

^^God dammit all fields!! You are making me regret my decisions now. I fulfilled all my SB pre-reqs and am starting doubting myself…

=[

I swear that is not what I am trying to do. I just believe that people should be informed of both sides and not go in thinking that UCSB looks EXACTLY like that picture and is paradise.

Like any school it has its faults and I merely want to point that out. When I was a senior in high school the only thing I heard about was its party school reputation. I just want people to know that there is more to the story that you probably won’t see on campus trips or in the brochures…

All in all it’s a pretty good school. The campus is alright. It does have its nice parts.

http://www.lotsafunmaps.com/view.php?id=305

@kingdom I’m making my bf take me too! haha We’re going on a 3 day trip up there and I want to check out the aquarium thats nearby too bc it’s supposed to be really cool. hopefully we’ll go during spring break which is next weeek!!

@allfields I think those things that wash up are seaweeds. At newport beach there’s always tons of them and theres always a bunch of flies and they smell
My brother went to SDSU and he has pictures of himself posing with dead sea lions. that’s how disgusting the beach is in that area.

Is that what those are? Thanks =]

What I want to know is why I have never seen those before at other beaches I’ve visited. It wasn’t until I got to SB that I’ve seen them…

Do they show up on all shores and SB just doesn’t clean them up? The beach would be so boss if it weren’t for those seaweeds and flies!
