I'll give an example. Neon Genesis Evangelion (BTW, I recommend it. It's an interesting story.) There are a lot of religious symbols used throughout the story, and the bad guys are called "angels." However, when asked if the religious themes were on purpose, the writers responded, "We just used them because they look cool." The Western viewer, who is so accustomed to looking for deeper meaning in everything, is often surprised to find that much of Japanese film doesn't strive for that. Japanese storytelling, in my opinion, tends to be simpler. Is it better or worse? No. It is what it is. However, the cynical Western viewer, so accustomed to wit and metaphorical zaniness as is present in much of our storytelling, often finds herself at a loss when she watches a Japanese film and goes, "that's it? No deeper meaning?"

I'm not a western viewer cause Im from India (biiiiiiiatchhhhhhh)

But I complelty disagree with that u said... anime is not straightforward! If anything its more confusing than western films

For example: have you seen the Ghost in the Shell movies? They are confusing as heeellllllllllllllllllllllllll I was seriously gonna shut the movie off cause it was so stupid and confusing .. :)

[EDIT]

I GOT EVEN 500 POSTS SO IM NOT GONNA POST NO MORE ..

LMFAO at ^^^^^^^ "defecated on myself"

i tried to watch anime before, and i even tried to read a graphic novel, but it just didn't work for me. i couldn't find any pleasure in it. i think that drawings of anime characters are alright, but when it comes to putting a story together with them, there's just something i can't make myself like about it, i dunno.

Gandhiji,

That's what, one anime? And besides, you missed my point. I was talking about the tools used in storytelling and the methods used at telling the stories, not the storylines themselves.

But you totally missed my point.

Great to see a fellow Indian here that watches anime, even if he doesn't enjoy it. Where I live at least, all I see are whites and non Japanese east/southeast asians like Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino, Cambodian, etc. watching anime. Jeez, it gets really friggin annoying.

I've noticed that too, where there seem alot of religious symbols (oftentimes the mysterious characters are depicted with crosses etc, even if it is in a silly, magic-girl series) because it looks 'cool' and 'gothic'. There are often titles that seem to scream religious connotations too, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trinity Blood, Angel Sanctuary, etc. It's rather interesting.

I don't have an educated opinion on anime, but it's never been something I've really engaged myself in. I frankly don't see the point. The art is not the style that I find appreciation in, and the whole cartoon thing just strikes me as lame.
