this thread was for uclaris personal satisfaction and the fact that i hate anime.

Okay. Now cowboy up and explain why. ;-)

i used to think anime was cute... when i was about six. i still respect it as good art, i suppose, theres just something a little creepy about the little sailor moon girls in the little short skirts, and the seeming fixation on such characters. ;P

i dont but pokemon, ugio, and dragon ballz are more of my 7 year old cousin's interests.

surfed_pipeline,

That hardly represents the broader spectrum of what's available for someone who watches anime.

That's like saying, "Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse" as the full gamut of American animation. Gah.

I agree with UCLAri...I admit that the popular anime that shows up on cartoon network during the day mostly isn't too great. Most of the shows on at that time are childish (even though I think they're cute and entertaining). surfed_pipeline, I think that you didn't really have an opportunity to see real anime...check out Escaflowne, Rurouni Kenshin, Weiss Kreuz, Noir, or Cowboy Bebop. That's pretty good starter anime and very decent. All of them also are in my top series list. They also have really nice soundtracks! For everybody in the familiar with Noir, don't you love the Salva Nos remix version of Melodie?

anime are not chidlish pursutis that only 7-year-olds would like to watch. some are very teenage-oriented, such as love hina. those are the REAL anime.

I don't like anime.

Anime is probably for all ages. Which is why they also have hentai. They just gotta cover everyone.

That's funny, Tufts. You went from Garfield to Tijuana Bibles.

i dont really like anime.. but i dont know much about it so.. yeah

but i wouldnt mind watching back to back episodes of sailor moon again. Oh i used to watch card captures.. or card-capturers.. i cant remember the name.
it brings back memories.. rushing into the living room straight after school, to watch it..

Card Captors.

It's too bad that most Westerners are still getting a pretty watered-down version of the great stuff that comes out here.

I love hentai :D

Ew. Tentacle porn. The bottom of the Japanese barrel.

If you classify the new show "Boondocks" as anime.. then no

But otherwise, I'm not particulary fond of anime... i guess i just dont get it

Personally I can't stand Anime, it's pointless.

Not hentai....

What, like movies and TV?

A lot of it seems pretty demeaning to women.......

come on.....hentai is awesome!

This is a complex issue. The answer is yes and no. Women take on very strong roles in many anime, and are oftentimes presented as strong both mentally and physically. Some examples are: Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, Naruto, Bleach, and Urusei Yatsura.

However, the same "strong" female character will still be prone to being objectified (big breasts, sex symbolism) and bouts of "emotional womanness". I have seen very few cases in anime where the woman rescues the man (it happens), and very few cases where the man cries before the woman does (it happens.)

Anime, like all art, has at least some tie-in to its source. Japan, as a country, still has a lot of issues with male-female gender relations. As a result, the role and representation of women in anime are affected. However, to just say that anime is outright chauvanistic is also a bit too broad.
