If so, how is the program? Do you like it? Anything not to like? What are the chances of being accepted into this major? What sorts of fields of concentration have you chosen within it?

Thanks!

100% of people who apply are accepted, I think. Maybe it’s only ~95%, but the “application” is a formality. People who are in it like its breadth and engagement with thought; they sometimes dislike that they don’t have some of the good things that come along with being in a formal department. They have to take somewhat more initiative in reaching out to professors whose work interested in them is the main one of those, I think, since there are no Professors of Social Studies, just affiliated professors from a bunch of other departments.

my son is a social studies major and will be graduating in may. he’ll be attending harvard law in the fall.

Thank you Exult. That was very helpful. Guitar, that is interesting information. I’m wondering about your son’s experience and enjoyment in this concentration.

My daughter is a soc studies major and will be graduating this may. Initially, she thought she would concentrate in govt. but selected Soc. studies. If I am not mistaken, one is required to write a senior thesis for soc, studies but not for Govt.

yes, a senior thesis done with social studies concentration. my son just completed his and did EXTREMELY well. it took him well over 1 year to gather info and prepare, but it was worth every hour.
