Anybody out there using the Army Post 9/11 GI Bill?

Just got eligibility level - have lots of questions about how it works!

Are housing costs paid monthly to us, or in lump sum?

Any snags getting certification letter through to the school?

Any info appreciated!

Not to steer you away from this site, but there’s an active Facebook group on the topic.

Just a couple quick responses (I am the certifying official for my school): They are paid monthly. Turn your paperwork in to the school as early as possible to help make sure things go smoothly.

Monthly to you, so a bit problematic if you live in a dorm that is usually paid up front for the entire semester. If not no issue.

It is paid monthly to you and prorated for school breaks. It is also paid in arrears…

Prorated for school breaks? I thought they didn’t pay anything at all for breaks… like summer and whatnot?

they don’t pay for school breaks, that is what @cap is saying.

Prorated as in you don’t get a full month housing for Dec., etc

Thank you for the info - what is the facebook group name?

I think the FB group is Grown and Flown Military Style

My friend’s daughters split her GI bill, so they each got 18 months of housing they could use over the 4 years. I know one used it for her first 9 months in the dorm but then took the other 9 months at a different time. She was an RA the second year, lived free in an apt the third year as she worked as an apt manager. She was a hustler and figured out all kinds of ways to pay for schools and living expenses. The second daughter had an athletic scholarships so also had different ways of using the GI bill funds.
