chemaddict, I think you should contact them and ask about that scholarship. Maybe they just sent scholarship notification a little bit later though? Well, it never hurts to check. I received a letter from them with the information that my application is complete just yesterday and it did clearly say that the decision will be sent out on or about April 1. But I wouldn't mind finding out earlier than that, like you did :) So just call them! And congrats on your acceptance! Are you going to enroll? And by the way, what were your stats?

TCNJ has rolling admissions. Some of my friends have already been accepted.

same some of my friends got their acceptance letters also (I applied BS/MD so thats probably why my letter is being delayed).

thanks! i'm probably not going to enroll, as this is more of a safety, but u never know..

as for my stats....

errr...

1500/2240 SAT
800 MathIIC, 790 Chem, 700 Bio M, 690 French
8/237 rank
full IB, a couple AP's where i could fit them..
err.. what else?
my EC's are relativly bad, the only standout being a place on last years national science olympiad championship team and a 4th place medal for one of the events.

oh yeah.. and gpa.. i think it's 3.92 unweighted

chemaddict17 - my stats are relatively the same (you have better SAT IIs but I have good ECs), and you got accepted uber-quickly. Did you do the "additional info" part of the application? I don't feel like doing it, and if you didn't do it and still got in then I probably won't.

wow i didn't know that they had rolling admissions.

peachykween - i did the common app, which is a first year thing for TCNJ this year.. and they have no supplement.. so no.

chemaddict and others who were already accepted (RD), when did you guys apply?

interesting... i called the admissions office, and they confirmed that they have rolling admissions once RD starts... what's also interesting is that if u don't get scholarships in this packet, u don't get them at all. which is bizarre, considering with a 1500 and a top 5% class rank, i thought i qualified for their full tuition thing. bizarre... and a pity, since that scholarship was one of the main reasons i chose TCNJ

as for when i applied.. i finished my application somewhere in mid december.. i got a thing from them dated the 24 of january that they had recieved my complete application

I thought they sent out financial stuff/scholarship info later on

Hi, my son was accepted into TCNJ this past week, and after reading chemaddict17's post I got nervous, as there was not mention of the outstanding scholars award in his acceptance letter. Since he does qualify (we are in-state) I called the admissions office today and spoke to a very nice, real live person. She said she is waiting for verification from my son's high school as to his class rank. She already had his SAT score up on her screen. After she verifies his rank, she said she will be in a position to issue the scholarship.

I was impressed with her accessibility, efficiency, and niceness!

Your stats gain you "consideraton" for merit award.

You are an out of state candidate, and perhaps the adminissions personnel detected a "less than" sincere interest on your part to attend. Have you visited and shown serious interest in TCNJ, or did you simply drop the standard app off via the web or postal mail?

Your prior responses indicate that you consider TCNJ nothing more than a safety. Perhaps, the college's "interest-meter" detected a superficiality in your approach.

You would be surprised at the number of qualified candidates vying for these positions. There is a percentage of students whose stats would qualify then for merit awards who are not even accepted to the university.

accepted to tcnj

7 year BS/MD applicant

status: going to interview at UMDNJ in 2 weeks

Took all AP classes at my school except Physics (there was none this year)

Hey, I didn't know it was that close to Princeton! (10 miles) We are definitely going to take a look.

Bomber-
Our son is a sophomore at TCNJ.
We also have been very impressed by the 'real live person' thing at TCNJ. Any of our concerns/questions have been addressed promptly, accurately and with kindness to boot! It's a lovely place.

j567p-
Congratulations!! Quite an accomplishment....I understand admission to the 7 year BS/MD program is VERY competitive. Our son's roommate is in the program. He's a great kid who will be a wonderful physician someday soon.

as to showing interest - i took a tour of the campus and was present for an info session

it's also quite possible they simply don't have my class rank. my school doesn't officially rank, and the system at our school made it difficult for me to get across to my GC that class rank was needed... tho i think in that case they should send the school a letter asking for my class rank anyway. i don't know.

a lady at my GC office said that it's quite common for ppl that get accepted to places much better than i would ever dream of getting accepted to do not get any scholarship at colleges that usually give lots of merit stuff. at least im not the only one.

oh well. i have 5 other applications

That is a good thing that you visited the college. It is possible that the college is validating your ranking and that may be contributing to the delay of any merit notification.

On the other hand, competition is fierce this year. To date, TCNJ has received well over 8000 applications and the app. receipt period does not end for another two weeks.

TCNJ's out-of-state enrollment has traditionally been 5%. Once the quality of the in-state candidate pool is sufficiently and continuously high, I believe the college intends to increase the out-of-state percentage. However, assume that this year's out-of-state enrollment will remain 5%. TCNJ seeks to enroll a freshman class of 1200. Therefore, there may be seats for 60 non-NJ residents. A 6% enrollment would allow for 72 students. However, 20-40 of the out-of-staters may be athletes, as TCNJ has one of the best D3 sports programs in the nation. As a result, contention for the remaining slots will be intense.

However, your stats are quite competitive and should garner you serious interest. Best of luck.

I have two children at TCNJ. My daughter turned down the Asa Packer scholarship to Lehigh and significant packages to other quality institutions to attend TCNJ. Seven of the top 20 students at her high school attend TCNJ, all with SAT scores >1400, and several are Ivy league caliber. TCNJ is a rising institution and is quietly shedding the safety-school perception.

hmm not sure yet, had an interview with TCNJ, and the director of admissions promised to expidite my application so I can find out before feb ends even though I applied RD. Is that a good sign?

Hi,

If anyone has any questions about TCNJ, please feel free to email me at BethW@ix.netcom.com I graduated cum laude from TCNJ in August 2005. I can also give you some advice with professors. Although it was not quite as selective (still very selective but even more so today) when I applied, I had a high GPA and 1240 SAT scores, but 720 on SAT II writing. I also wrote a very strong essay. I actually went somewhere else my freshman year, had deferred my acceptance to TCNJ and was able to transfer into TCNJ. (I don't think they usually allow students to do so but made an exception for me, because of medical issues that caused me to defer my acceptance and also transfer). They are pretty good for accomodating students with disabilities, if that is an issue for anyone. There were some professors who were not accomodating, but most professors are very good. I can't remember specific questions from my interview. It's now a very selective school, recently added in the 'Most Selective' category for one of those undergrad guides, along with Princeton and Harvard, and is called a 'Public Ivy'. It's tough, especially the science courses such as bio and chem, but it's definitely possible to do well. I graduated with a 3.549 GPA and am now applying to post-baccalaureate pre-medical programs, because I was a psych major and did not have time to take all the pre-reqs for med school. Please feel free to email me with any questions about TCNJ at BethW@ix.netcom.com

Sincerely,
Beth Warren

Good luck re applying for the BS/MD program. When I applied to TCNJ, I did not bother to apply for that because they said minimum SAT of 1300 and I was a few points below that, though I was told later they sometimes made exceptions. Now the requirement is probably higher. UMDNJ is a great school, I have volunteered there for the past 4 1/2 years with a world reknowned pediatric immunologist. You get a lot of clinical experience there - I'm hoping to attend med school there myself. The doctor I've volunteered with has written me recommendations for my post-bac premed applications, and I'm sure his letter helped. However, be aware the science courses at TCNJ can be very difficult and you have to maintain a high GPA to stay in the BS/MD program. I did meet several TCNJ alumni at UMDNJ, including a few who did the BS/MD program. Feel free to email me at Beth_W@ix.netcom.com if you have any questions about UMDNJ or TCNJ :) A friend of a friend is in the BS/MD program, I might be able to get her to email you, if you'd like to talk to her.

Sincerely,
Beth
