Anyone care to read my Why Swarthmore?

I know it's asking a lot, but please provide your email address here or send an email and I will send it to you.

If you have AIM, IM me and you can copy/paste (I've found it's easier to give feedback that way, I can explain confusing remarks better). If you don't have AIM, then let me know and I'll email you instead.

Haha, I'll AIM it to you after I revise it, now. I'm too ashamed!

I want it!

i'll proof it over aim if you want.

Sure, send it to be by email.

willywonka,
am interested in your reasons for liking Swarthmore when you simultaneously like Washington & Lee so much.

vivaan1@hotmail.com any of u feel free to send me stuff and i will respond with my thoughts

"willywonka,

I get that a lot, actually, from those who know anything about the two schools. Minus the apprehension I still have about Swarthmore's workload (I can't shake it, sorry), I like the two schools about the same. I think the best way I can justify this is to point out that I'm from rural Maryland, where the south meets the north. At the same time, I find the southern gentleman lifestyle charming and the Swarthmore's Yankee tradition of fair play respectable.

More tangibly, both schools are the perfect size for me, and both are almost entirely concentrated on the undergrad experience (W&L only has 300-some law students). Both schools have wonderful locations, even if they are a bit different. Both schools stress the importance of student-professor relations.

By now you've probably figured out that, so far, all of my reasons are really vague and can be found at more than just these two schools. I suppose that both schools just possess personalities and characteristics that clicked with mine.

I'll get the essay out to others after revision.

Casualresponder, you sort of gave your identity away the other day in the Parents' forum! :)

So, it seems a seasoned veteran has wittily exposed me as the wishy-washy inarticulate-when-it-comes-to-college student that I am.

Copies of the revised essay have been sent to Achat and prepare4worst. I want to thank anyone who has or will have spent their precious time helping me out with this. I deeply appreciate it all.

I also hope that I didn't come off as too immature and uninformed in my response re: W&L and Swarthmore.

Don't worry Willy (Bobby?). I don't even know what you are talking about..

Yes, Bobby. I was just worried that it reflects poorly upon me for not having a real reason as to how I can love both Swarthmore and W&L. It does seem silly, though, doesn't it?

No, I don't think it is silly. If you knew how we (our family) selected colleges, then you would think you are way ahead in this process. It turns out that my son loves the smallness and the quality of undergrad education at an LAC. We should have looked at other LACs then. But we did not know that much about LACs (I know, I know there is USNWR) and selected only well-known research unis. We did visit all of the ones he applied except Swarthmore.

Some of the choices make no sense to me anymore. The only reason we applied to Swarthmore was all the literature we got in the mail and the fact that my son knew someone 2 years older who goes there. Anyway, it worked out in the end and he is happy with his choice.

haha i don't know if i'd be the best person to read it but honestly why swarthmore? like what do you like about it? im curious because i live in the town and we're always wondering what sort of people are interested in the college

Haha, well, to be quick about it (since I have some work to do before I go to sleep and leave tomorrow morning to visit your fine town):

I think the people I've talked to who attend Swarthmore currently are some of the most impressive people I've ever met. I'm a sucker for (what seems to be) a beautiful campus. I love everything about the small LAC experience. The Quaker tradition has done many things to make the school a positive place to live for four years. Students have the stats to get into HYP in most cases, so they must really want to be at Swarthmore if they attend. And there are specific clubs, etc., but you know.
