Hey all! As deadlines get closer, I was wondering if anyone is considering applying ED to Scripps? I'm a high school senior and I recently was told about Sripps. The more I learn about Scripps, the more I'm attracted to the idea of applying ED1 here. Anyone else considering to apply ED I or ED II for fall 2015?

noone? not even RD?

I’m applying early decision I for scripps

OP, not a good idea to apply ED anyplace you have not visited…

I agree, don’t apply ED without visiting

my daughter is leaving this weekend for a 3 day fly-in program at Scripps. We’ll see how she likes it at the end of the visit. OP, are you considering Scripps?

@intparent @honeybee63 Mm, I’m trying to decide between Smith and Scripps. I’ve visited Smith but not Scripps. While I liked Smith alot, I’m not too keen on going there. However I have still not made up my mind yet. I might be visiting Scripps soon, but I’m not sure. My college choices will also depend largely upon my SAT scores. Also, the college visit sounds exciting! Hopefully she finds out if Scripps will be a good fit for her!
@teancoffee I think they look at past grades and most recent (midterm) grades. Are you considering to apply?

The campus cultures at Smith and Scripps are quite different. Scripps does not have the student body diversity or activist spirit, although there is a very open and tolerant ‘vibe’ – but it does have a very close-knit culture. Smith is almost 3x bigger – although Scripps has the consortium. You can take as many as half your classes at the other Claremont colleges and even major in a department at another college. Both campuses are very beautiful in different ways, but I get the feeling that they attract different young women. Smith will feel more like an all women’s college without the very close proximity of co-ed colleges sharing dining and other activities and facilities. Smith is an older college and one of the original Seven Sisters, while Scripps is quite a bit more selective than Smith (in terms of admissions %). I hope you can visit Scripps and get a feel for the college.

@nynightowl Thanks! Yes, one of the major reasons I’m really interested in Scripps is because of the Consortium. I did like Smith, it was beautiful and big and all of that, but as time passed by, I realized more and more about how I’m not too keen on attending an all girl’s school (the type of environment Smith seems to offer). However, Scripps seems to offer the best of both worlds in this case. Another issue is that my twin sister’s top school choice is Smith. In terms of academics and extra curricular, I have a few extras and my GC told us that colleges would sometimes pick only one of the twins or triplets. Since I don’t have an interest in Smith, I don’t want to ruin ANY chance for my sister of getting into her top choice school (even if it turns out that this doesn’t matter at all.)
I’m sure Scripps and Smith attract different young women, but for some reason I just don’t feel like Smith can be the best fit for me. I really want to visit Scripps ASAP because it seems great so far. Till then, I’ve been doing my research and trying my best to find out as much as possible. One good thing is that my GC attended Pitzer but he took more than half of his classes at Scripps so he’s been helping me understand more about the college and he’s also trying to get me in contact with other Scripps graduates.
Are you considering applying to Scripps or…? (:

One of my daughters is visiting Scripps on their multicultural program right now. She actually is looking at women’s colleges, and also likes some of the other Claremont Colleges so it might be perfect for her too. She’s a little worried about lack of diversity at Scripps but this trip should clear that up for her, one way or the other!

@nynightowl Oh I see! That sounds great! I hope she finds the best fit for her. Also, if you can, would you request your daughter to share a small part of her experience at Scripps on this thread? It would be her perspective, but I’d still be interested to know how she liked it. :)

Of course! I’ll have her post when she gets home tomorrow - red eye flight leaving at midnight arriving at 11:00 AM! I sure hope it was worth the flight across the country! They did tour the other campuses the first day so she’ll be able to tell you about that too! From her texts, she reported the food was excellent, the dorms were spectacular and spacious, and the whole campus just too gorgeous. She took a really interesting class this morning, which she said even improved her impression of the college! But I’ll let her tell you more…

D just got home and debriefed. The 1:00 AM flight out of LAX was delayed ( after she had waited for 6 hours at the airport!) so she missed a connection and was traveling for almost 24 hours - so I’m going to pass on her report while she attempts some homework and then crashes! Here’s the scuttlebutt as best I can recall: the campus is incredibly, almost unbelievably pretty, like a Mediterranean resort, with gorgeous dorms (what she saw). The student body has lots of girls from the west coast, and even on the fly-in program there were only 3 from the east coast! It may be due to lack of awareness of the college outside the region.
Her impression was that the consortium plays a large role in many students’ lives, in socializing, sports, dining etc. You probably know how easy it is to take classes at the other colleges and even major at another college. One thing she learned is that the senior thesis (required of every Scripps student ) is required even if you design your own major or major outside Scripps. D thought the one class she took was fascinating - it was a Core 3 class called ‘creating and recreating genji’ about the first novel ever written - in Japanese. She found a few of the girls in the class to be very bright and the class itself really engaging and well taught. Apparently Scripps students get close to professors even if they haven’t had them for a class, lots of dog walking, lunches, mentoring, etc.

What else? double majors are quite common, work study is possible on other campuses and off campus, there is some merit aid given holistically (not by scores), very flexible and generous study abroad programs including airfare stipend for study abroad! great food and a great coffee shop, the gym has women size equipment plus ‘Scripps only’ and ‘women only’ hours. A car is allowed but not necessary - students can borrow a car from the college free!
So… she really liked the college very much and will definitely apply but had a few hesitations (and remember these are just personal observations): she wan’t keen on the distribution requirements, the student body wasn’t as diverse as some and overall the students weren’t maybe quite as intellectual or as interesting as some others (this is a girl who really liked Swarthmore!), and finally she thought there might be some security issues - there was a lot of focus on locking stuff up which she hadn’t seen at some other colleges. Again, this was only one person and only 2 days so take what you want and put it in the mix! The positive FAR outweighed the negative and despite her 24 hour trip home, she was thrilled to have gone!
So, best of luck to you and your sister, whatever you decide :)

@nynightowl Hi! Sorry for not replying earlier; my IB midterm grades are being distributed.
Thankyou so much for taking the time to give me such a detailed response! The flight delay sounds like a bummer but I’m glad your daughter had a wonderful time during the visit. Everything you’ve mentioned sounds great so far. I totally understand what your daughter meant by the somewhat lack/absence of a few things. I guess these are subjective things that I won’t find out about unless I go visit Scripps myself. This really helped me understand more about Scripps. My SAT results come out soon so a major part of what colleges I apply to will also depend on the scores. Hopefully I do well and will be able to prove myself as a deserving candidate.
Thankyou so much once again. Goodluck to you and your daughter too!
