Would like to hear from anyone who has done research at Harvard biochem or cell / molecular departments. I am thinking of approaching from PIs, but would like to gather some inputs.
No one on CC has research experience at Harvard? I was really hoping to get some advice.
The short answer to your question is yes. The longer answer is that there are few Harvard students here who stick around once admitted, so the specifics to your question will remain unanswered. Your best bet is the ask the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the appropriate department. Of course, this conversation is moot until such time as you actually get admitted.
@skieurope - thank you for your reply. I was thinking of summer research (in lieu of NIH, where I went last summer).
FWIW: At large research universities, like Harvard, PhD candidates and graduate students are generally given priority in terms of assisting professors in their research projects. Undergraduates that do research are mostly Harvard juniors and seniors. That’s true for the summer as well. As research positions are posted on a Harvard employment website that requires an HUID and password, a high school student is NOT going to be to able to easily find out about those positions – and if they did find out about an opportunity, a high school student would be at the bottom of the pecking order, in terms of getting hired. So, IMHO it’s unrealistic for a high school student to think about going down this road.
I was offered a terrific research opportunity while still in HS but chose to attend a well known program instead. I had randomly emailed a well known professor about doing research in his lab and he asked to speak to my past PI’s. He then interviewed me over Skype before offering the research position. I have known others who have done research at Harvard (some in the medical field) while still in HS so it is certainly not out of the question. There is a bit of luck or probably connections in getting such positions though.
@Multiverse7 - that is encouraging. Do you mind if I PM you for some more info?
I’m currently in high school and worked part time last summer as an intern in neuroscience/psychiatry at a Harvard Medical School Hospital and took some classes that worked with imaging instrumentation at Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus. What are you interested in knowing?
@FishyBears - I will contact you based on the outcome tomorrow. Thank you very much.
