Seems like they allow a REALLY limited amount of characters in the EC section. For both the Listing of the activity itself as well as the Position of leaderships........

Argh! Anyone else frustrated?

I know! it is very annoying. I tried to elaborate on an activity that wasn’t crystal clear from the title and I couldn’t fit it with the character limit! I wonder if it would be advantageous to attach a file with some more information on activities in the additional information section, but I do remember reading that Columbia wanted you to limit yourself to only the space provided, so i’m not sure

They want you to limit yourself but if you can’t explain yourself in a meaningful manner within their limited space, I’m sure they’d appreciate the clarification. Just be sure to indicate in your extra documentation that your clarity was limited by the system.

It seems to favor people with higher scores and less focused ECs, yet I would think that the opposite would be true for a school like Columbia.

I’m quite sure that Columbia doesn’t favor people with less focused ECs. It could be that these people you’re talking about have diverse interests and depth in each, which is in line with Columbia’s ‘identity’ but I’m sure Columbia doesn’t take people who’re jacks of all trades.

No, I didn’t mean they favor scatterred ECs over focused ones; what I meant to say was that the application alone gives the impression that scores are more important than having outstanding ECs.

Yeah and the online form doesn’t even ask what you’ve done over ur summers. common app is complete bs.

It does ask what you did over your summers. But this app. seems to not care much for EC’s compared to essays and scores. Only a total of 6 in-school activities and no spot for sports. Each sport takes up one app. space, along with clubs etc. >.<
