@twoin18 Why do you consider Utah a stronger dance program the UCI? Is it because of the focused training? Looking for best opportunity for DS to succeed and gain the needed training to optimize his chances to dance professionally if he chooses that route.
@NevrMynd51 We were looking for a ballet focused program (Utah divides students into separate ballet and modern programs and a ballet student only does one year each of modern, contemporary and jazz), whereas UCI is broader (you do ballet, modern and jazz and have to take two all the way through). UCI also has a mix of BA and BFA students (the relative % is unclear) rather than being all BFA.
So I should have been clearer that I think Utah is stronger for ballet, but
if you want a mix of dance styles then the UCI program structure may be preferable. Also UCI seems to have the option for a more specific focus on choreography if that’s what your S wants.
@Twoin18 That’s kind of what i figured was the reason as I believe you had said DD was a ballet focus.
I think my S is leaning heavily toward UCI because of the broader program focus. And the fact that there is the opportunity to focus on choreography, as well. He has finally trimmed his list down to about 7 programs, not wanting to go to the mid-west for some reason. Has UCI, UCLA, Chapman, UCSB, NYU, Fordham and Pace as the schools he is most interest in. Still trying to get him to look into Utah.
Wondering if anyone has experience or heard about the University of Cincinnati program?
Anyone else audition at the september audtion for University of Arizona? My daughter did and said that there was probably 60-70 people. They said they would notify them by the beginning of November
I just wanted to say holy cow! My daughter has done two auditions so far- one with a single other girl and one with no other auditioners. Both were her joining into a series of the college’s dance classes. I didn’t know such large groups auditioned together!
Well, I guess that is not a very large number! One of the girls she talked with (upperclassmen) said she auditioned with over 100 at university of Arizona a few years ago!
Yes 60 is typical (and tolerable). Over 100 is not uncommon and then it gets hard to stand out. It’s another reason to do early auditions and/or audition tours which usually have a slightly smaller number of participants.
Wow! Who knew! The other two auditions she has scheduled get capped far below that as well (in the teens, I believe). It’s crazy how different it all is from person to person and school to school as far as process and audition experience.
Our experience last year was around 45+ ppl. at each audition. One was so crowded (Marymount Manhattan) that dancers couldn’t fully extend without bumping into another dancer. And that was with the group divided into two separate rooms!
Our experience last year was similar. My daughter auditioned for NYU, Purchase, Montclair, and Rutgers and they all had anywhere from 45-80 other students auditioning. All had cuts except for Rutgers, so for the solo and interview round it was much less.
What was the number of male dancers at some of these auditions, best guess? My DS will be auditioning in Jan/Feb.
@NevrMynd51 it’s hard to say for sure but my guess would range from just a couple to a max of 10 or less. There are some moms on this board who probably have more direct experience with this than my daughter did, so maybe they’ll chime in!
@MomL98 Thanks for responding! I think that is pretty much the consensus I have been hearing in regards to male dancers auditioning, somewhere between 1-10. Have heard several have had none. I wonder if that depends on location of the auditions, such as New York or LA verse say Ohio for example?
@NevrMynd51 we are currently at Dancewave in NYC (college fair and auditions) and it’s really striking how very few boys there are here. I would guess there are at least 200 kids and I’ve maybe seen 3 or 4 boys.
We are also at Dancewave and saw the same. My daughter was in audition roundup with half the dancers and there were only four boys in her half. She was speaking with one last night and he’s only auditioning for three schools too, nowhere near the full complement of choices.
@milgymfam good luck to your daughter at the audition today! My dd is in the last group, so she’s still sleeping. ?
Mine is in the last group too, so they’re in there together. Then we make the looong drive home. I hope they’re both having fun and showing what they can do!
Hahaha we probably saw each other in the hallway!
We are in terrible traffic trying to get to the airport and hoping we don’t miss our plane!
I didn’t even go in today. Just dropped at the door and went to enjoy a bench and a book. We actually drove up from northern Virginia so left right from the audition and just got home. I hope you guys made your flight, and I hope your D felt good about her audition!
