@milgymfam phew that was a long trip after a full day! I hope 95 wasn’t as bad as the traffic in the city—it was at a standstill and it took us almost 2 hours to get to LaGuardia. Thankfully I am a leave-extra-early-for-the-airport kind of person, so we still made it—but it was definitely cutting it very close!
My dd felt pretty good about the audition. More than anything, I think it was good practice for auditions to come. Now we wait while she keeps moving forward with her applications.
Did your dd’s list of schools shift at all? Lol, we were hoping to shorten the list more than we did, but mostly she really liked what she heard. Rutgers (because of the program) and Marymount Manhattan (because she realized she really doesn’t want an 100% urban campus) are now off her list, but Hofstra is added after talking to some students from there. So I guess a net -1 is something.
A question for the board…
Is it wrong of me to have my DS applying to schools that are out of his comfort zone? Be it location, style of dance offered, etc? He really wants to just focus on school on the West coast but I don’t want him to miss out on an opportunity that he doesn’t know if he will like or not like because he is nervous about moving “too far from home”. Am I crazy?
@threegirlpileup her list actually grew! Which is good imo because a wide net and all, especially if you’re not a superstar. I know she was told repeatedly that they would hear from these schools within a few weeks, but will they really? I hope so!
@NevrMynd51 I did the same thing. My D wanted California and ballet. Full stop. Well unfortunately unless you’re the best thing since sliced bread you need a wider base of applications than that- that was like 2-3 schools. She’s had to explore both new locations and other dance focuses if she wants to have a chance of being accepted- and hopefully at more than one place.
My daughter was up at Dancewave this weekend too and had a great experience! Her list has stayed consistent and this was a great chance to talk to some schools on her list! She said the staff there was great and the peer to peer talk was awesome! She goes Friday for Elon audition. So with University of Arizona last month, Dancewave and now Elon she is off to a great start!
@NevrMynd51 I have let my dd take the lead in choosing schools to apply to, but I have definitely encouraged her to cast a wide net in the hope that she will have a decent number of options. She also would prefer to be closer to home…so we never looked at anything on the West Coast, and eventually the schools in Texas and Florida got axed. But that still left her with something like 15 schools, so more than she can realistically audition for anyway!
@milgymfam I hope we hear something sooner rather than later! The limbo is hard.
@emilyhuntnelson good luck to your dd at her Elon audition! Depending on your dd’s interests, you might consider taking a look at UNC-Greensboro while you’re in the neighborhood. It has a very good contemporary/choreography focused program and is only about half an hour or so from Elon. My dd is auditioning there later this month.
We have heard from four Dancewave schools today in some fashion- one asking for a Skype meeting (to hopefully happen at the end of this week), one asking for my D’s transcript, one letting her know decisions would be forthcoming soon, and one asking her to come for a visit/shadow day. She auditioned for a bunch of schools really, because she wasn’t expecting to get in to most places. She’d applied academically to almost all of them prior to the auditions. There are two that she didn’t, but only because she’s retaking her SAT in a few weeks and hoping for a jump. They’re both test optional, but not for homeschoolers. Boo.
ugh that stinks! wonder why they have different requirements

@gmfalv, on their face, the difference in rules is to help them understand “mommy grades” in context. In reality, my daughter has less than five mom assigned grades in four years, has dual enrolled at two colleges, and has done two years of accredited online school. But… she has slow processing speed and standardized tests will always be her Achilles. She’s heard in some form (in no particular order) from Dean, ECU, Harrt, and U of the Arts.
Hey @milgymfam we’re homeschoolers, too! It has certainly felt like a lot preparing all the homeschool materials, the academic applications, and the dance applications. So many details to track and balls in the air! I’m impressed that you’re mostly done with the academic side of things. We’re getting there, but definitely have a ways to go.
@threegirlpileup luckily I did the school report last year for D19, and that was fundamentally the same document this year. Transcripts I’ve kept as we went- all I did was addend the DE transcript and the other high school to what she already had. She does sometimes wish we could’ve afforded for her to stay in the school- test optional would be huge for her right now- but we could afford the outside school or the dance training, not both.
We were at Dancewave. My son was auditioning for only a few schools because he has auditions scheduled for four other schools, including three schools that were there. We didn’t know how crowded this audition would be and thought he might do better at an on-campus or regional audition where there is a little more time. Turns out he had a really positive experience on both days- he enjoyed the staff and the kids and the content. I’m really glad we went. It was worth the flight across the country and in hindsight wish we’d strategized better to do more of his auditions there because he felt prepared after the warm up session, and having spent a day with the other dancers on Saturday, made him more comfortable in the auditions.
We have heard from ECU (kind of a general email about “nice to meet you” we will be reviewing audition tapes etc and will be in touch for scholarships.
We heard from AMDA, not a shock as they call all the time… Not interested.
We heard from UofArts, that she qualified for waiver of app fee and would be admitted, need to submit formal application (this I believe was based off summer intensive/not dancewave)
Elon audition tomorrow…
@emilyhuntnelson yes we also heard from AMDA - my daughter got a scholarship and acceptance from them over the summer but she doesn’t think the program is serious enough for her. also wants more of a college feel.
thats great about Uarts- we haven’t heard from them yet. but we’ve already applied so i guess theyre waiting to give her a final decision.
D’s Skype meeting is tonight, having to happen in her studio’s dressing room squished between class and rehearsal. That’s not anxiety inducing at all. Ha ha ha. She didn’t hear anything like that from U of the Arts, so I guess she wasn’t what they were looking for. She did get her acceptance to U of Wyoming this morning, and though not talked about much on here (because of no audition maybe?) she does like what she sees of their dance program and we are planning to visit in the spring.
we haven;t heard anything for uarts yet but think maybe thats because we’ve already applied to the school so theyre waiting for our final decision from admissions
@gmfalv At Dancewave he auditioned for The Ohio State, Adelphi, and LIU-Post. He has heard back from The Ohio State, as well as from some schools that he hadn’t applied to.
