Anyone else getting annoyed by costs?

Seriously...
$100 for fpf
$100 for sir
$95 for osp
$20 for HOUSING APP?
$100-195 for calso
and I'm prob missing tons of other fees (feel free to post them here)

Honestly, although it might not seem like a huge amount of money compared to total college costs per year, it seems that EVERYTHING is being charged. I'm not mad, just annoyed...why can't they just collect a check or something for everything at once instead of having us pull agerout credit cards every time we want to do something? Is this going to be a trend that continues even when I'm actually at berk?

Am I the only one annoyed? LOL

Edit - corrected housing app cost, thanks ownagerisms

FPF is optional
SIR goes towards your tuition
OSP is optional
Housing is only 20$
Calso is optional

CalSO is a ripoff. You have to pay to get priority registration? What a crock. As if I need to be told by counselors how to get my course schedules.

All the other fees make sense.

SIR is optional too. ;-)

^ haha
fpf isn't optional unless u want to be screwed
sir goes towards tuition - valid point
osp is optional - a chance to convince someone to go to berk shouldn't cost something
calso IS...a ripoff

and my point was not that they're expensive or unjustified, but rather we have to pay every time we want to do something. there is no organized way in which we can just pay for everything at once...its just annoying to me I guess

Yea I find this annoying too. All these fees make up our 'defacto' tuition. Technically the UC system is completely 'tuition-free'. The regents decided to implement fees to fund UC schools since enrollment became too big for free tuition decades ago.

Ah yes, you're missing the following fees:
University Registration Fee
Educational Fee
Berkeley Campus Fee***
Class Pass Fee
Health Insurance Fee
Nonresident Tuition Fee (you're from San Jose so you don't pay this)

***This just adds to the mess of fees... the "berkeley campus fee" can be further broken down into:
ASUC fee ($27.50), a Student Center fee ($6), an Ethnic Studies fee ($2.25), an Intramural Sports Facility fee ($28.50), a Life Safety fee ($46.00), a Recruitment and Retention Centers fee ($3), a Campus Health Care fee ($47.50), a Recreational Sports Fee ($40), and a Green Initiative Fund Fee ($5; awaiting approval).

Here's the breakdown from the registrar for fees: UC Berkeley Registrar : Registration Fees

you know what guys....CalSo might give early registration this year...but what about next year? and the next? and then the next? no more calsos then dawwwggsss

bartleby: really, don't shove aside CalSO so quickly like that. The main reason is not to get priority registration but to get to know a few people, get to know the campus better and to get a taste of and learn about Cal before you come here. I really think it was worth the money.

Well if you want any consolation,

AP fee = $82/test
AP Study guides = ~$20/book
SAT fee = ~$45
SAT Study Guides = ~$20
SAT II fee = ~$30
SAT II Study Guides = ~$20
COLLEGE FEEs = ~$60

FOR ME:
9 APs total = $738
9 AP SG = $180
3 SATs = $135
2 SAT SG = $40
5 SAT II = $150
6 SAT II SG = $120
5 Colleges = $300

Total: $1663. Oh gosh, I feel terrible now.. :(

@castel - how about those mochas at Starbucks, while you were pondering each word in the "world around you" essay?? LOL

CalSO is like 24-48 hours. If you can't make friends without going to CalSO with a bunch of kids you'll be with for four more years, then either you have problems, or the people at Cal do. Although I guess getting to know Cal is a legitimate reason to come. I simply live across the Bay and know both the physical geography of the campus and the culture of the University pretty well.

an Ethnic Studies fee ($2.25) a Recruitment and Retention Centers fee ($3) a Recreational Sports Fee ($40), and a Green Initiative Fund Fee ($5; awaiting approval).

Screw those things. It's like fifty bucks, but so stupid.

"The Campus Fee consists of an Intramural Sports Facility fee ($28.50), a Campus Health Care fee ($47.50), a Recreational Sports Fee ($40)."

What if someone doesn't want to partake in or watch intramural sports, can that fee be waived?

Does the Recreational Sports Fee pay for unlimited use of the recreation center/gym/swimming/classes?

Why is there a Campus Health Care Fee on top of the health insurance fee?

No.

No, you still need to buy a $10/semester membership at the gym.

Because it gives you access to Tang Health Services, which are open to everyone, not just those who buy health insurance from the university (i.e. those who have private insurance.)

um, that's what CARS is for.
