I've always been interested in the military and I knew that I'd wanted to be an officer for at least part of my life, maybe not my career.

But, now I'm starting to think more and more about enlisting. People tell me I'm nuts, especially when one of the branches I'm considering going into is the Marines. I've got the grades to go to a good school(What can I say, I post on CC) and have a good chance at one of the Academies, but something just makes me want to enlist. People have told me with my first time ACT score I should score 90+ on the ASVAB, so I'll basically get to pick whatever job I want and I'm an Eagle Scout, so I'll go in at a higher pay grade. Plus I'll get the GI Bill when I decide to go back to college.

Anyone else want to do something like this? Or am I just crazy, lol? That's what everyone tells me, but I march to my own drum.

I’ve considered both the Air Force and the Navy. I’m not so sure about enlistment right after high school, though. I may consider ROTC or some other plan (at least 2 years in college first) instead.

Meh, I don’t think you’re crazy. My school turns out a lot of potential officers, so military enlistment is pretty common around here.

i’m more interested in helping people than killing them

but good luck with that!

^ bahaha asakkdsjdkdfk

A good soldier doesn’t kill, but protects.

Show some respect. They die for you and all you can do is brand them as murderers?

uh i’d be fine if 4,000+ soldiers hadn’t died in iraq. probably happier actually.

Though usually only appreciated when needed, the Coast Guard is one of the five branches in the military and they are not combat oriented.

Really with a 90+ you can get any job you want? I scored a 94 on the ASVAB and I didn’t know that.

You might want to look into doing ROTC since you’ll enter in as an officer, and you’ll be able to get all of your college schooling done early. One of my college buddies did NROTC during undergrad and is now an engineer aboard a nuclear sub. From what I’ve heard he’s really enjoying it.

thank you for considering serving our nation… the one’s who taunt you are the ones too coward to protect this country… yea I’m going to do rotc in college that way I get a college degree from a good school and still join as an officer

pnthrs11, in World War II the Army hardly needed the draft. Now the Army is more starved for recruits than ever. Our foreign policy changed, not the bravery of the American people.

I actually considered the Academies and that’s it.
West Point and such and from the Air Force Academy being one of its top.
My Social Science Teacher graduated from the Air Force Academy and he is a badass pilot.

That’s what I heard, and I’m hoping it’s true. I’d try to get a job in Marine Intelligence. But they are very hard to get and you need to have a lengthy background check done.

I’ve always wanted an excuse to kill a bunch of people.

Sign me up!

^ U can do that on Call of duty 1,2,3,4, and 5

I agree with people saying that ROTC or the academies are the way to go if you are considering military among other options such as traditional college. Good luck OP.

Have you considered Virginia Military Institute? It is a full fledged military school. Enlistment is not required and only 30-40% of graduates enlist at some point. The bond of the people who graduate from VMI is really strong and you are basically guaranteed a job after graduation from an alum. Your brother rats will be your friends for the rest of your life. ROTC is required and some classes are military based. It is very hard to describe but check out the website to get a better feel. You have to go there to truly know what goes on.

My brother attends VMI and is in the National Guard. He is enlisting in the army this summer, while he still has 2 years left at school. VMI is used to this and professors are willing to work around weekend training schedules and such.
