Anyone ever purchase a refurbished Mac from Apple?

My D is looking at a MacBook Pro dual-core Intel i7. We work with a certified Apple technician and he suggested to purchase it refurbished from Apple; said he could upgrade the memory significantly and give us a 3 year extended warranty for the $$ we save on purchasing a new one (without voiding the initial warranty).

Anyone had experience with refurbished Apple Mac's? Would you suggest it?

We’ve bought them, and they’ve been fine, but I’d say buy only those models still for sale new. Some older models (like pre-solid-aluminum MBP) have been lemons, with bad graphics chips. But those should be long gone now.

I just bought (December 23) a 15" Early 2011 MBP from the Apple refurb store and I was thoroughly impressed! The machine arrived the next day at around 10AM (just over 24 hours from when I ordered it) and I have not had a single problem with it. From what I’ve read and been told, the only difference between a refurb machine and a new one from the store is it comes in a plain white box instead of the fancy packaging from the store. Besides that, you can’t tell them apart!

We went ahead and purchased the refurbished model, glad to hear that neither of you had problems and yes, this is a model that is still being sold. My D originally wanted a 15 inch (she has an older 13 inch Mac) but everyone told her to get 13 inch for college since it is easier to transport. I hope that was the right decision!
