I was ED accepted into the CCIS and I’m beginning to rethink my dual major choice of Computer Science/Journalism. I’ve been investigating other options, and I think that I might really enjoy studying computer science and linguistics while I attend NEU, with maybe linguistics as a minor. How is the instruction? I’ve heard that the classes are hard, but not much outside of that.
I’m not sure man. I hope to major in their ASL program and all I know is what their site tells me. You could try emailing someone in the linguistics department for their insight. I did that with the ASL department and found out some good stuff.
I might try to do that, thanks. I imagine that they would tell me about things like class size and what not, but I really wish I could get some “unfiltered” opinions, too. Linguistics seems cool, but I don’t want to minor in it if there’s a better option or if it tanks my GPA just for the sake of it.
Yeah it’s a decision you can’t make with simply a quick Google. I’d definitely try and get into contact with someone in the department. They could even connect you to a student too, possibly.
I think the pivotal question right now, @Bozusaki , is how you feel about taking that one “interpreting the day’s news” journalism class in the fall of freshman year. I’m pretty sure you have the AP Lit/Lang credit to place out of ENGW 1111, so you’ll have an elective even if you stay in CS+Journalism; you could use that spot to take Intro Linguistics and see for yourself what you think of the department and the field. (That’s why my D, who is in CS+Design, will probably do if she goes to NU.) CS+Linguistics majors only take that one LING class in the first semester, so the only reason to make a formal change of major before trying out the intro class would be if you’re certain you don’t even want to minor in journalism, and thus want to do something else instead of that first journalism class. (Meanwhile, if you get any more “scoop” about the linguistics program, be sure to pass it on )
Great program from what ive heard, small class sizes, i could get more information monday as one of my friends is in that program she is also a combined degree with something else aswell. Phone is dying
Not sure if this is relevant but Northeastern president Joseph Aoun is a linguist.
I’m in intro linguistics right now - feel free to message me with your specific questions. I might also know a few people to refer you to up the chain.
I was able to get in touch with a faculty member, and she’s looking to arrange a class visit for me when I’m in town during one of the welcome days. From what she has told me, the program has 70 total enrolled students, around 15 of which are also involved in computer science in some way. Very interested to see what I’m able to learn by sitting in on a class or two!
Nice! Hope the experience goes well for you.
I’m also interested in the combined Ling/CS major :D. I saw you all around the EA forum before, crazy to think I might be going into the same program as you LOL, as I’ve never run into another applicant even remotely interested in Linguistics. Is there anything you could tell me that you found out about the program during your stay? I’d be super interested to hear, as I still don’t know much about it.
Also, does anyone know how easy it is to switch into CCIS from CAS? I was originally admitted EA into Linguistics, but recently had a change of heart and decided to request a major change from Ling to the CS/Ling combined major (which is in CCIS) on my portal. Do you think it will go through? No update on my App Status portal yet… :\
@FilthyFujoji I don’t know the linguistics program, but switching into any college is pretty easy. If you request before orientation, you should be good to go before Fall. I haven’t heard of one ever being rejected.
@FilthyFujoji , my D was admitted EA to Urban Landscape in CAMD, but then requested a change to CS+Design. (She’s not 100% set on Design as the “X” - Ling is another strong contender.) It took a week or two for the change request to go through. Just one data point but it sounds as if these changes are rarely a problem.
@PengsPhils @aquapt Awesome, that’s reassuring :’)
