I am thinking of applying to Amherst. I read on the Amherst brochure about the Five College consortium. It occur to me that Amherst students can cross-register in four other schools. However, I also discover that some of the colleges in the consortium are female college.

Would it be a problem for male students (I’m a male) to cross register?

However, you might want to e-mail professors at either Mount Holyoke or Smith before deciding to enroll in their courses.

Some very popular courses might have strict limits as to the number of students who can enroll. Thus, professors might give preference to students from certain institutions and of certain standings (e.g. "preference is given to Amherst Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors").

When my son attended, he always tried to take one course each semester elsewhere. He particularly enjoyed going to courses at Smith, for certain favorite teachers and course offerings. I think he took a Shakespeare course there, and another in playwriting. Amherst had/has a wonderful resident playwright but it's good to get another perspective for the creative arts.

A friend of his from Amherst took a few courses at Mt. Holyoke College, and found that a very positive experience.

In addition to courses, there are various events, speakers, parties and performances that attract students from one campus to the other on evenings and weekends. It's very, very normal and good.

He also enjoyed the change of pace from being in the City of Northampton, which has a different energy than the Town of Amherst, although he liked them both. He saw different people, too, since the Town of Amherst has a smaller population than the City of Northampton, although that city is very pleasant, manageable, artistic, friendly and interesting. He found it refreshing to walk around on a different Main Street, and that was part of the experience each week of going to classes on the other campus.

His closest friends, both male and female, were Amherst College students, but he also enjoyed the change of scene every week. I think I once read that, on average, students take one course per year on another campus. Or maybe it's one per semester?? Anyway, it's very normal.
