Hello,
About a year ago when I was making my college list I put Drew at the top, and applied with the Dean's Choice App. and got in with a 20,000 dollar merit scholarship back in December....I am now about 98% sure I am going to go there...I have been on the campus many times when I was younger (since I live in the area) and have more recently attended a summer tour and info. session in August as well as Open House in November....the campus and the programs (and the generous merit award) has really won me over......

So what do you all think about Drew? Is anyone else going there for sure?

My son also got a generous scholarship from Drew and is edging that way. He is visiting again next week but he still wants to wait and see what happens in March/April with his other apps and $. He really likes Drew though and I think it will come down to them and one other college in MA that has more diversity and a friendly campus too. I am hoping this visit will help him get a feel of the campus and sitting in on a class will make it seem more "real". Tours are great but visiting on your own and making a private tour is more helpful sometimes. Last visit in the fall went well, great weather, extremely helpful staff, interesting programs and lots of clubs, friendly students, beautiful campus, nice town, and easy access to NYC, which he liked. The free application had us look more into it and I do think it is a "hidden gem", not for everyone of course, but a good, solid college. Do you plan to visit again before April?

That's really awesome to hear....I actually forgot to mention before that I did walk around the campus on my own twice late last spring and once again in early summer when I had no school. The campus atmosphere is really great, and definately is 100% ran by the student's themselves. Having lived in the area my entire life, as you mentioned, the proximity to the city is great and the town of Madison itself is very nice.

I hope to attend an Ambassador's Day soon (there are many days available) and attend the event at the end of April for admitted students.....

I applied to 8 schools, I got into 6/8 so far, one I am withdrawing, and the other I am waiting to hear from...so it is really just down to the two, but I am pretty sure it will be Drew....

If you don't mind me asking what does you son plan on majoring in (if he knows yet) and what other school is he still waiting to hear from?

I sent you a PM, but he is leaning toward P.Science or Psychology, but who knows? He sometimes wishes he had firmer goals, but I told him that exploring is a lot of fun too.

i got stuck with a pretty not fun person on my overnight, four years ago or whenever that was. let me know when you are visiting and i can probably get you into contact with some cool people, with similar interests if you let me know what yours are. a lot of my contacts have graduated but i still know a fair number of the juniors and seniors.

Hello all... my son will definitely be attending Drew as a freshman this fall. He feels it is an excellent fit for him for quite a few reasons: It has small, intimate classes - with professors who, for the most part, seem to be known for being interesting and passionate; a neuroscience program (we'd attended a "Science Day" and were very impressed by one of the head professors of that program); friendly, somewhat liberal student body; not too close or too far from home (we live an hour and fifteen minutes away). It's nice that since freshman & sophomores can't have cars, the train station is within walking distance (some other schools he was accepted to would not have been as convenient in that regard).... all in all, Drew seems like it'll be great!

CollegeRocks... which other school are you considering? If you end up going to Drew, would you commute there or live in the dorm - since you evidently live very close by.

Dbruns... I thought I'd remember your son was interested in Clark U - is that the school in Mass he is still waiting on? We'd considered that school as well - it is very strong in psychology - and seems like a fantastic school. He crossed it off of his list because it just seemed too far and from what we'd read, not the nicest city to live in.

lelalellen, yes he is interested in Clark. It's actually about an hour closer to us than Drew, but not enough for it to matter to him. He is visiting Drew Tuesday to sit in on a class and have lunch, etc. and hopefully will look at Clark again for a personalized visit before April. There are things he likes about both and commented once he wishes he could combine them, but either way, I think he'll be fine.

How was your son's visit to Drew on Tuesday?

Also, maybe someone could help me....I am deciding which AP exams to take this May right now, and I am definately taking an English one (as you know there is English Language/Comp and English Literature/Comp)...now Drew used to take both I know, but now their site says "Comp Only" under the English exam....but does anyone know which exam they are referring two (since both have comp in their title)? Thanks

Hi, His visit went well and he's been filling me in a little more everyday. I wish I knew about the AP question, he could of asked. He decided to take one English instead of two and I hope it's the right one! Will call too and ask. I know they don't take the government and he might not bother; has until monday to decide. I do think it the non Lit one though.
He arrived about 9 and met a nice young man who was a junior. He showed him around all the places the tour doesn't go (he said that with a smile) and they had breakfast. (food was "fine")He brought him in about 3 dorms that he had friends in to see the differences in them and although freshman dorms were the worst, he said it really wasn't that bad. He saw the student areas more upclose and the library. He attended an Abnormal Psychology class that he thought was very interesting and had a great professor,(Professor Jennings) who was very engaging. They had lunch and then he talked to some teachers and staff, but had to get going by 3.He wanted to ask more about the chorus, but the professor wasn't there that day. He said his host was happy there, sometimes it seems a little small to him, but the attention and quality he thought were great. He doesn't regret it. Another student said he thought once that he should of gone to a college in NYC, but visiting a lot at Drew (the train is so close), he realized he wouldn't of liked it full time. His host was going abroad and they are very supportive with that. He felt over half the students go somewhere and they have some great programs in the USA too. He gave him tips about book buying, clubs, etc. and told him to call him anytime if he had more questions. He knew he was doing a "job" but it didn't feel like that and genuinely had a nice time. I am looking forward to my visit in April when I have some time off.

wow sounds like your son's visit there was very informative for him :)

I actually did a little research on Drew's English Department's online catalog and I believe that by "comp only" they were referring to the Language and Composition AP examination since this is the only oen mentioned in the catalog...although I know that Drew did accept the Lit/Comp one for last year....but I guess they changed....also I thoguht Drew did take the gov and politics exam (it says so on their website)?

I'll double check, but I do know in The Drew course catalog there isn't a "breadth" for government, you don't get out of any class's and I'm pretty sure he said they told him that at the school. It said for English, you can get out of English 1 with a 4+ on the AP.
He did have a nice visit and it was just as well he didn't get to sleep over. He was tired enough and he doesn't put much stock in those. I asked him if he wanted to visit any other schools, but for now, he'll wait until April and see what happens. He saw Fordham twice, Clark twice, Drew, three times, and the rest at least once. Only Marist was a non-visit add-on.
My son did Deans Choice too and I think his GC sent the mid-years, but I'm not sure. She just told him she sent them in January.

College Rocks - yes, my son had submitted the Dean's Choice Application - and his high school had forwarded his first marking period grades... I imagine they have sent off his 2nd mp grades as well - they just came out about a week ago. Drew did not specify that they wanted any mid term - or marking period grades, although they, like all colleges want final transcripts.

lelalellen, I think that would be the case. On their Guidance Counselor page, it says what they would require and the mid-year grades were there. I can't see why, even if you're admitted already, they wouldn't want them. I think it also said somewhere they can use them to determine certain scholarships they give out now.
Will your son be going to the admitted student day in April?

well I e-mail Drew to check....how my school did it was they met with us in our English classes and gave us a sheet of where we applied and we had to put where we wanted our mid year reports sent and I didn't check Drew off because the initial Dean's Choice application and the acceptance letter mad no mention of a midyear report, and only mentioned the final transcript (which all schools require)....my GC said they mainly use the mid-year if a student has not been selected, and are not usually required if you were admitted before they become available....also I know Drew has not seen any of my grades from this year- the transcript was sent before November 23 (the first dean's choice deadline-it was extended I believe) and it did not have even my Marking Period (quarter) 1 grades...but as I said I have e-mailed them to double check...I just hope if they do I didn't mess up lol

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure they would of called or sent a letter. The directions to the GC were general, geared to regular applicants I'm sure. I thought their Deans App was great, but it's not really mentioned in any literature, just ED and RD. If you need to send it, they will get it in plenty of time.
