Anyone going to the New Paltz accepted students day 4/5?

I think my son and husband are heading up to check it out. Anyone else?

I think my son may go too

Is your son a freshman? Does he know if he is definitely going to NP?

my son is attending.Freshman.

ddotjon - Is your son looking forward to it? Are you going with him? I hope my S can get a good idea of what the school is all about since he will most likely base his decision to transfer on what he thinks after going.

I wish there was a way he could meet up with other transfer students since I think he feels kinda alone.

Lilymoon- yes I am going with him. He is looking forward to it, but he is still not 100% going to New Paltz. We are going to visit Vtech and JMU spring break. So, then hopefully we will know for sure. OOS tuition is a lot, so it also depends on merit money offered. So far, no merit money from JMU. Maybe your son could find a facebook group of New Paltz transfers. That might help him be more comfortable. I'm sure, though, with the mid size SUNYS, students are transferrring in and out a lot. You know, a lot start out freshman year OOS and then realize, why am I paying OOS tuition, and transfer in. I've heard that numerous times from other parents. Might be my son next year, HAHA.

ddotjon - I wish there were a facebook transfer group. Haven't been able to locate one. The NP fans group has some transfers as does the 2011 group that you mentioned, but the other issue he has is that he is not ready to advertise the fact that he is thinking of transferring so he doesn't want to join any groups on his facebook. Kind of a catch 22.

Yes, we too are realizing why pay for private school when state school might even be a better option.

I hope you have a fun spring break visiting schools. Let me know how it goes. BTW, what kind of kid is your son and what is he looking for in a school?

Lilymoon...I don't know exactly what he is looking for in a school, hopefully we'll know it when we find it. I don't think he's the kind of kid to go ga ga over any school. We liked New Paltz and Geneseo when we toured last summer, but we didn't spend much time, so hopefully Saturday we can get a better feel for New Paltz. What kind of kid is he? Well, he's a good student, not like he spends a lot of time studying though. He likes to go out with his friends a lot. They play tennis, shoot pool, play poker, xbox, and always end up back at Applebee's for food. He also listens to music all the time, very loud! And collects a lot of DVD's movies. And his room is really messy, I hope he cleans up his act for next year as far as neatness is concerned. He says not to worry, he can be neat if he wants to. As far as I can tell, he doesn't drink or smoke. He's really a great kid, but I'm partial, of course.

dot - Your son sounds a lot like mine or maybe just most boys this age. What kind of music does your son like? Mine is super into alternative music and playing the guitar.

He didn't go gaga over any school either, altho Miami was very pretty and tropical so he liked that, but I think New Paltz has more his type of laid back crowd. This Saturday is a big deal for us as it is his last chance to see if it's something he wants to make the change to.

Let's compare notes after the weekend. :)

Any feed back on today's visits to NP? My S decided to go so I put down the deposit. We toured the Lenape & Esophus dorms and attended the school of Business presentation. We had been there several weeks ago( in the pouring rain) for the basic tour and saw the other suite dorms & cafeteria. It was nice seeing the sun out and all the other accepted students on campus ( my son likes the gender ratio!).The academic fair was nice as we spoke with several faculty who were very friendly & informative. I got a nice feel for school from this event. I've also had positive feedback from different friends, co workers ect who know students attending that are very happy at NP. I think my S will fit in and be happy here.

Coskat,
we also went today to New Paltz accepted students open house. Congratulations on making your decision and deposit. It must be a nice feeling. We toured Gage and another dorm, forgot the name. We also went to the academic fair, and attended an information session on secondary ed. The chairman of the department was very informative and we were impressed. We had already made the deposit online. There are a few schools in Va. we are going to look at next weekend, so depending on that, we will know for sure. My son really wants to go out of New York, but OOS tuition, might not be affordable. Not sure of the aid statement yet.

My S and husband had a nice visit at the open house. They got there a little late and just caught the end of a speaker from his intended major which was unfortunate. Other than that, they felt is was well worthwhile to see the campus alive with new/old students and to check out some of the organizations on campus. They really liked the school and my S is giving the transfer option a lot of thought.
